UK - Edinburgh-based lighting specialists Tower Productions were called in to light a section of Castlehill in Edinburgh's historic Old Town during the Christmas period. The brief stipulated strictly no pea-lights and no flashing santas! The area presented a number of challenges, not least the height of the buildings, the pitch of the roofs, fixing consent from different parties and mains and control to all areas. Coupled with the road having to remain open, this meant some diligent cherry-picker work.

The final scheme involved 131 Par cans (dichroic filters fitted to those in inaccessible places), 22 Source Four profiles, 34 exterior birdies, 11 400W HQI floods, a pair of Studio Due City Colors and over 220m of rope light. The existing street lighting was gelled to reduce brightness, and the whole supplied by one 300A 3-phase mains supply with dimmers dotted around the rooftops!

Australia - Sydney Opera House recently celebrated the opening of its sixth venue, the Forecourt - one of the city's most spectacular outdoor venues, situated on and around the Opera House steps. Throughout the summer, the Forecourt will host a diverse range of free and ticketed events - from the Sydney Symphony, jazz and rock concerts, folk and country music to unique large-scale participatory performances, all set against Sydney's impressive harbourside backdrop.

As the Forecourt will stage a diversity of productions, each with differing requirements, it was decided to initially hire the staging, starting with a domed stage supplied by Edwin Shirley Staging.

When it came to the lighting and audio equipment, the choice of equipment was driven by the fact that a versatile and modular production package could easily be utilized in other venues within the Opera House. "It's

UK - Capital Radio's Capital Christmas Live event returned to Earls Court at the close of last year. All of the artists perform a live 20-minute set, rather than relying on playback, which requires some pretty nifty footwork from the production team.

John Probyn headed up the ClearChannel Entertainments team, working alongside Emma Hodgetts, who managed the event on behalf of Capital Radio. The two assembled a team of trusted suppliers with production manager Mark Ward and Kahren Williams at its vanguard.

Mark Ward explained: "There was a major transformation to this year's show, because for the first time it was televised on Christmas Eve. This brought changes to several aspects of the production, and meant that lighting became a major priority. We also added a second satellite stage to allow the presenters to be filmed whilst the stage was being set for the next act, re

Israel - A new museum revealing the history of stage lighting has been opened in Hod Hasharon, Israel. The museum charts the development of technology and how its progress dramatically influenced the development of theatre, particularly during the last century. Visitors are taken on a tour which begins in the Renaissance and ends in contemporary times, presenting the different methods used to light the stage. The museum contains authentic artefacts from the

UK - With effect from 1 March, one of the UK's largest independent hire companies, Hawthorn Theatrical, is re-naming and re-organizing its business to better meet the needs of its customers. Hawthorn, as it will now be known, is creating three divisions to offer specialist support and service to clients. The new structure, with direct access phone numbers and named team members, whose contact details will be posted on the website, should ensure that customers get the support and advice they need from the right person for them." The new website will be updated monthly with news and photogra

UK - When the UK's first permanent lighting exhibition opens in April at the Gaiety Theatre on the Isle of Man, ETC's Source Four will be officially recognized as one of the most groundbreaking luminaires of our time, standing alongside equipment from the early days of electrical theatre lighting. The project aims to allow the public to discover the behind-the-scenes elements of a working theatre, offering interactive tours with a well versed theatre guide explaining how each piece of equipment works.

Theatre production manager Seamus Shea said: "We aimed to get a lantern from each decade of the twentieth century. While there are lots of manufacturers of modern theatre lighting, there's sadly been very little in the way of evolutionary changes. We asked ETC to donate the Source Four because it's the one device that's revolutionized the way theatres work."

UK - Working together, sound design and installation specialists CP Sound and professional audio distributors Arbiter Pro Audio have brokered a finance deal to enable the Shoosh Bar in Thames Ditton, Surrey, to benefit from some of the best sound, lighting and AV equipment.

Shoosh is a stylish independently-owned, new-build bar/restaurant concept, and the finance deal enabled the design, specification and installation of an impressive technical infrastructure at the venue. Cutting a deal became necessary as cash was tight after the funding of interior building works, designed by Steve Howie of Howie Design. New ventures are traditionally the most challenging when it comes to raising additional finance. However, CP Sound’s Colin Pattenden undertook to help Shoosh owner Terry Ramsay raise the necessary, so he didn’t have to compromise on his sound and lighting installa
