Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: Coemar was showing its Flex trio of fixtures - iSpot Flex, iWash Flex and iProfile Flex - first introduced at LDI in Las Vegas last autumn (see L&SI December 2002). Features include full CMY interchangeable colour wheels, variable CTO, the largest variety of rotating gobos on the market, a library of effects (clouds, fire, sky, stars etc), prisms, a wide range of zooms, zap strobe and framing shutters.

Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: VXCO Lighting Systems showed its new DMXCreator software V5.8 and the updated DMXCreator 512MK2 PC-DMX interface. The stand-alone memory of the interface is extended from 2000 to 8000 scenes, allowing for applications which require a high amount of scenes/sequences such as architectural applications or large club shows. In stand-alone mode, the PC may be disconnected and the scenes and sequences can be recalled through an attachable standard PC keyboard. The DMX input of the interface box is also available in this mode and allows dimmer functions or other controls to be set manually from any external DMX desk.

Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: Czech moving light manufacturer Robe Show Lighting launched its first 1200W fixture, the ColorSpot 1200. This is the latest addition to Robe's comprehensive AT (Advanced Technology) family of moving head and colour changing fixtures, and is designed to be the ultimate creative tool for large theatre, TV and live shows, and for club and venue installations, say Robe.

The fixture uses a powerful Phillips 1200W short arc discharge lamp, further boosted by a high quality optical system. Major ColorSpot 1200 features include a versatile CMY colour mixing system, variable CTO plus an additional colour wheel, 12 rotating dichroic glass gobos (indexable and replaceable) on two wheels offering 48 gobo combinations, iris, four rotating prisms and effects, variable frost, an incredibly flexible 13° - 42° linear zoom, remote focus, dimmer and shutter.

Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: High End Systems & Flying Pig Systems were on the stand of German distributor Arcus Lighting, showing an array of new products including High End's Studio Beam CTO and Trackspot 2, both of which debuted at LDI 2002 in Las Vegas. Studio Beam CTO is a new version of the popular Studio Beam: a high-output incandescent lamp source (3200K colour temperature) means that the lamp power supply and fans are not required, making the fixture far quieter and ideal for use in theatres and TV studios. Trackspot 2 builds on the features of the original, but now offers rotating gobos and two prisms for improved beam effects. It also features an MSD 250W lamp source with a 2,000 hour lamp life. Like its predecessor, Trackspot 2 will also be an affordable, compact fixture for the nightclub/corporate/small theatre market.

Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: New products on show from Robert Juliat included the Manon compact wide-angle truss followspot (13-24° beam angle), which joins the Provence family, and the Mistral - a 1200W MSR/MSD profile aimed at high-power architectural applications. Both these new luminaires are expected to be available from May 2003. Two new profiles join the 700SX and 700SX2 series; the 711SX and 711SX2 offer a zoom of 8°-16° for up to 30% longer throws. Also on show was a new departure for the company, the Lolita - a compact profile (300mm in length) with a zoom of 25°-45°, dichroic mirror, condenser lens and four shutter blades. Lolita is available in two versions: tungsten for lamps up to 100W 12V, with an electronic dimmable transformer, or a discharge version for 70W CDM lamps, with or without power supply.

Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: Italy-based connector manufacturer Link introduced the LKS 19-pin lighting connector range (including a new rubber locking ring) and the LKS Spider connector for break-ins and break-outs. Also new were the SB Gold 48, 56 and 64-channel stage boxes, featuring gold-plated contacts for audio distribution. Additions to the company's Eurocable range included the Eurocable Cat 5E cables specifically designed for live applications, and a Eurocable range of High Definition TV coaxial cables, plus the new 16 amp Y chord rubber splitter for clean and efficient distribution.

Germany - ProLight&Sound 2003: New from Australian manufacturer LSC Lighting is the Minim lighting control desk, which offers a cut-down feature-set version of the established Maxim desk. Minim can be used in a theatrical two-preset mode of 12 channels, or by using the Grab Master, a two-preset mode of 24 channels. With DMX 512-A output, the Minim can directly control up to 24 channels of digital dimmers. Other features include three pages of memory with 12 playback masters on each page; three preset masters - Red, Yellow and Grab; Add/Solo button with level flash master; and chase effects including stop/step, random, bounce and single shot.

Still retaining the core value synonymous with all Chroma-Q products, the Universal has been designed to maximize flexibility and usability by incorporating advanced design features. Its integrated universal mounting system adjusts between 158-275mm and mounts fixtures with up to 50° beam angles without loss of light. DMX control for fan speed, scrolling speed, gel-saver mode and reset is also now incorporated.

France - Parisian PA rental company Régietek has become the first French member of the Synco Europe Network, in an agreement confirmed at the 2003 AES Convention in Amsterdam this month. Synco Network founder Fred Heuves, a director of the newly-privatized Ampco Flashlight Group, made the announcement with Laurent Maestre, sales and financial director of Régietek.

The company was founded in April 2002 by three experienced sound engineers, Laurent Maestre, rental director Régis Casu and commercial director Cédric Duminy. Their move was promopted by the mutual desire to develop a highly professional rental, service and distribution operation.

Sweden - Primetec, one-stop supplier of sound, lighting and AV technology for events and exhibitions, has been awarded the assignment to light Liseberg’s latest super attraction: the new ‘Balder’ rollercoaster. The lighting system for Balder, the biggest and steepest wooden rollercoaster in the Nordic region, is the biggest permanent outdoor lighting installation ever seen in Sweden.

In March, the new pride of Liseberg, the biggest amusement park in Scandinavia, was opened for a preview and a press visit. Balder will be a breathtaking 37m high experience with a 70° pitch and a top speed of about 90km per hour. In total ‘Balder’ has cost around SEK 100 million.

UK - The Moving Light Company was chosen by the English National Opera at the London Coliseum to supply the automated lighting required for its production of The Handmaid's Tale, which opened this week. This is the first time that moving lights have been used in a production by the English National Opera.

Adapted from the novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is set in the America of the future, where the government has been overthrown by a religious dictatorship. The production was premiered in Copenhagen in 2000, where the creative team of director Phyllida Lloyd, designer Peter McKintosh and lighting designer Simon Mills made use of the Royal Danish Opera's automated lighting system. UK - Stage Electrics has announced that Anna Western has been promoted to customer service manager. Western, who has been with the company for three years, will work closely with branch managers in developing and training the front line customer-facing staff based in the company’s 10 branches.

Stage Electrics currently has 23 staff in these key positions throughout the country, who will now be referred to as customer service representatives. They will continue to report directly to their respective managers but work closely with Western in her new position. She has extensive sales and customer service experience, bringing the necessary skills to this new and important role.

Latvia - Latvian Television (LTV) is producing this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Riga on the 24 May, with an estimated worldwide television audience of 200 million. Swedish specialist company Spectra+ will be achieving its Eurovision hat-trick this year, with its third Eurovision project, and will be working alongside Latvia’s leading lighting company, Riga-based Company NA Ltd, a supplier of technical equipment and knowledge with a strong reputation throughout the Baltic.

Spectra+ and Company NA’s mission includes supplying lighting, video and rigging equipment for the event, including technical co-ordination and technical crew. Spectra+ and Company NA crew members will be working on site for approximately one month prior to the event.

Brickman's credits over his 25 year career include Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, the Barcelona and Nagano Olympic Games Ceremonies, Steven Spielberg's ‘AI’ and the new ‘Cat in the Hat’ movie. Current projects include the new touring production of the Blue Man Group and Matchbox 20.

UK - Enttec has released a new firmware version of its DMXStreamer V1.2 - which incorporates a solar clock to allow the calculation of sunrise and sunset times anywhere in the world all year round. With this new feature users can schedule shows to start or stop at sunrise or sunset. By combining different scheduling options, the DMXStreamer can accommodate virtually any scenario: for example, show A - run on Monday two hours before sunrise and stop on Friday at 2300; show B - run on Saturday at sunset and loop six times; show C - run on Sunday at 30 minutes after sunset and run till Monday (when show A starts).

UK - Reading-based Blinding Light supplied Studio Due Mini City colour changing luminaires to TV lighting director Bernie Davis for a special edition of the BBC’s ‘Songs of Praise’ called ‘The Big Sing’, staged at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

Their seminal role in the show was to light the acoustic ‘mushrooms’ in the Albert Hall’s roof, in a series of beguiling, rich saturated colours. The mushrooms - normally a dull off-white - are a vital ingredient of the Hall’s sound, but a constant source of aesthetic distraction to anyone working on visuals. By transforming them into a feature, the mushrooms become an integral part of the live experience of being ‘on location’ in one of the world’s most architecturally spectacular venues.

UK - DHA Lighting has announced that it is now offering same day service as standard for the creation of monochrome glass gobos in all of its standard sizes. Until now, monochrome gobos have taken three working days as standard. This new level of service means that DHA Lighting now offer the fastest monochrome glass gobo service in the UK.

Monochrome glass gobos allow far more complex designs to be created than with traditional metal gobos - in particular, images can be created without the ‘tagging’ required to hold metal gobos together, or the gobos can contain high-quality photographic half-tone images. DHA’s monochrome glass gobos are produced to a resolution of 3600dpi as standard on heat-resistant, aluminium coated borosilicate glass.

USA - In rock and roll, there is no substitute for reliability. After years of searching for dependable digital cable for its oceanic research, the US Government found the solution in TMB’s ProPlex, a unique product with its roots in concert touring.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) studies marine mammals worldwide using a custom towed hydrophone array spanning over three miles. Previously, expedition scientists could not find good data cable that was also rugged enough to withstand the constant use in rough seas and extreme temperatures. Using a combination of custom lighting, projection and effects, evoke transformed the exterior and front of house areas of the Ocean venue in Hackney for this high profile event.

evoke used a mixture of moving and generic fixtures, fitted with custom multi-colour and high definition glass gobos manufactured by Rosco, to create an ever-changing environment. Control was provided by a Rosco Horizon system - a Windows-based PC lighting console.

Gearhouse South Africa was contracted by Jenny Lenahan Productions to provide the technical equipment and skills for the event, which took its theme from three decades of television and featured music, celebrities and television personalities from each of those eras.

USA - High End Systems has introduced the new x.Spot Xtreme luminaire. With the 2:1 lens, x.Spot Xtreme is 40% brighter than the original x.Spot with a 4:1 lens. At 16,000 lumens, its brightness surpasses all other competing fixtures in its category, say High End.

Advances in lamp technology have been instrumental in the creation of this new product. Philips has developed the P3, or improved pinch lamp, which essentially allows the lamp to operate at higher temperatures than ever before. This offers increased brightness and extended lamp life.
