UK - XL Video supplied projection and playback equipment, while Enttec Sound and Light supplied the lighting, for the 2004 National Television Awards, staged recently at the Royal Albert Hall. It was the first time that XL has been involved in this high profile event. Lazlett recommended XL to the show's producers, Indigo Television, and the project was managed for XL by Paul Wood.

The screen was custom made for XL by ECT from Matt Brite material to Bill Lazlett's set design, co-ordinated by Wood. It measured 29m wide and was 10m high at the stage right end and 2m high at stage left, curving around the rear of the stage. The projection was via 10 Barco ELM R18 projectors, with five projectors overlaid in two stacks for optimum brightness, situated in the RAH's Grand Tier boxes.

UK - Selecon UK has announced that David Wilkins, formerly a senior manager with Lancelyn in Oxford, has joined their team as UK market manager with effect from 25 October. Mike Goldberg, Selecon's European sales director comments: "This is a very positive appointment. David has a great deal of experience in the lighting industry and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Wilkins originally trained in stage management at the Guildford School of Acting, after which he worked for a number of hire companies rigging lighting and staging equipment. It was the lighting side of the business that caught his imagination and he joined Strand Lighting, where he stayed for seven years, doing a variety of jobs including estimator, project manager and mobile sales engineer. UK - A.C. Lighting has reported the sale of a large quantity of SpectraLite cases to Stagelight, a leading Belgian lighting production company. StageLight, which supplies to the entertainment and performing arts markets, purchased 24 SpectraLite cases after a successful trial using the product to send out equipment from its in-house rental service.

Stagelight chose the cases due to their combination of stylish design, high build quality and scratch-proof material. The trial cases have been in regular use since they were purchased 12 months ago and have transported a wide range of equipment, including power and microphone cables, Hog PCs and ETC Source Fopur PARs.

The cases are constructed from an injection moulded, custom blended thermoplastic resin material which although often lighter than conventional cases, is able to withstand harsh touring environments. The material is

UK - The Effects Company has announced an expansion to its range of essences available for the Aromatech System. The available range has now expanded to include 49 'off the shelf ' essences, with the inclusion of 'notes' such as Anti-Tobacco, Cologne, Pizza, Hickory and Leather. All Effects Company essences are noted for their particular realism and the standard range is complemented by a library of an additional 290 'specials'. In preparation for Christmas, four seasonal specials are available - Christmas Spice, Frankincense and Myrrh, Mince Pie and Mulled Wine, the company reports.

USA - OptiLED has announced the launch of its Designer Dimmable, a breakthrough LED lamp that, for the first time, features lighting intensity and distribution control in a familiar form factor, with outer dimensions identical to an ordinary halogen MR16.

The Designer Dimmable offers full performance at 12 volts DC or AC and dimming capability from 10 volts down to three volts, where it operates at candle glow. At full power, the unit requires less than two watts.

USA - American DJ will be holding its Customer Appreciation Party on February 23, 2005 during the Mobile Beat 2005 Show at Las Vegas' famously popular Beach Night Club, which was voted "no 1 Party Club in Las Vegas" in a 2004 poll conducted by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

The party is free for Mobile Beat show attendees. "It's our way of thanking customers for their patronage and support," said Scott Davies, general manager of the American DJ Group of Companies. USA - Color Kinetics has announced revenues of $11.1 million for the third quarter of 2004. Revenues increased 42% from the $7.8 million reported in the third quarter of 2003 and increased 9% from the $10.2 million reported in the second quarter of 2004. Net income for the second quarter increased to $853,000, or $.04 per diluted share, compared to $8,000, or $.00 per diluted share for the third quarter of 2003. The company's cash and short-term investments at 30 September 2004 totaled $55 million.

UK - Entec Lighting is supplying full production and crew to the popular Virgo Productions UK theatre tour of Oh What A Night. Created in 1997 - and still starring Kid Creole and the outrageously camp Nigel Roach as Stretch - the show was initially conceived for a short season at Blackpool Opera House. Since then, it's thrilled audiences across the UK, Europe and Australia, featuring 36 pumping, all-action hits from the dizzy disco-crazy heights of the 1970's. USA - OptiLED recently launched its new (LED), colour-changing Optical. The new High Intensity Vorticular Enclosure (HIVE) modular system delivers three times as much light as typical so-called "high power" LED lighting and is the latest technology introduced as part of OptiLED's new Modular Optical Array Series.

The HIVE offers lighting designers a range of flexibility and colour-changing capabilities that previously were considered impossible. Its modular design makes it suitable for large lighting projects from flood lighting buildings and large architectural features through to theatrical productions or underwater applications like fountains and pools. The HIVE module is also appealing to fixture manufacturers wanting to create a range of RGB lighting.

USA - Clay Paky America Inc and Group One Ltd have announced a change to their existing relationship. As of 1 January 2005, Group One will become part of the expanding Clay Paky America network of dealers and will continue to provide support for Clay Paky fixtures through its repair facilities. Clay Paky America will expand its sales force with the hiring of a regional sales manager for the Central and Eastern US.

USA - Super Vision International Inc, the Florida-based manufacturer of fibre optic and LED lighting systems, has announced that Advanced Lighting Systems Inc of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, has signed a license to Super Vision's 'Variable Color Lighting System' 1990 patent developed in 1988 by Richard Belliveau of High End Systems. This follows the announcement in October that Canada-based Spectrum Manufacturing had signed a license to the '687' patent.

Super Vision purchased this patent from High End Systems to provide open access to the industry for intellectual property rights in the production and sale of colour-changing LED systems. Advanced Lighting specializes in the manufacture of fibre optic and LED lighting products for the architectural and entertainment industry.

UK - The Hilton Metropole Hotel, located close to Birmingham's NEC (National Exhibition Centre) was transformed into a spectacular setting for the Smirnoff BEDA Awards - the annual gathering of the members of the Bar Entertainment and Dance Association. BEDA's annual awards event brings together managers, owners, suppliers and promoters to celebrate the finest venues in the UK.

Over recent years, Pulsar has designed and supplied the lighting system for the BEDA Awards dinner, and this year the company came up with a striking lighting design which would meet the varying demands of the show. The lighting system comprised Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200, MiniScan HPE, Alpha Wash, Alpha Spot HPE, Stage Light 300, Stage Colour 300 and CP 250 automated lighting fixtures. Denmark - Bico Professionel A/S, the Danish dealer for Italian manufacturer LDR, has recently specified and installed a batch of Suono F250 MSD luminaries to illuminate the new Alfa Romeo showroom in Birkeroed close to Copenhagen, Demnark. A total of 19 of the units of the units, in silver, were used to light the interiors of the building and to highlight the new Alfa Romeo cars.

The fixtures were specified by Mogens Gewecke from Bico, who says: "I took the project through from start to finish, so we had to interact with all the involved contractors. The ability to interact with the internal fittings design and to project an even beam of light with low maintenance were all top priorities when it came to choosing the lights."

Belgium - Night of The Proms is a high profile music and entertainment spectacular, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, with 18 sold-out nights in Belgium's largest arena, the 15,000 capacity Antwerp Sportpaleis, before touring to Holland, Germany and France. Belgian production company EML is supplying lighting, sound - and via E/T/C UK - large format projection.

The show is a fusion of popular and classical music, featuring a 72 piece orchestra and 50-strong choir, conducted by Robert Groslot, plus a series of soloists and special guests. The 2004 Antwerp line up includes Joe Cocker, Shaggy, John Miles and James Brown plus a four-piece 'house' electric band and three backing vocalists.

This year several important production changes were made, the main ones being the introduction of the additional visual component of projection and a new layout for the stage. LD

Hong Kong - Citizens in Jakarta, Indonesia will now see a new multi-colour landmark in their skyline due to a lighting installation using light emitting diode (LED) technology provided by OptiLED. The eye-catching lighting effects created on the exterior of the 25-storey Indosat building are vivid and sharp, even from many miles away, and has set it apart from the rest of its neighbours dotting the skyline.

Indosat is the primary provider of international telecommunication services in Indonesia and is involved in all forms of satellite and communication media. It wanted a facility that truly reflected its technologically advanced nature and drive for innovation not only in the interior environment but also projected on the exterior.

UK - Ed Pagett, the well-known general manager of VLPS Lighting Services which merged with PRG recently, has left the company following an internal reorganization which sees David Keighley of LSD-Fourth Phase take over at the head of the newly-formed PRG Lighting division. It is understood that Pagett left the company in mid-October, although no official statement had been issued by PRG at the time of going to press.

USA - The creative thinking behind Elation Professional's new DP-640 combination dimmer and relay switch pack is a hybrid unit that's ideally suited to the needs of users in the stage, touring and rental markets.

USA - Recent weeks have seen a ground-swell of opinion among LED lighting manufacturers following the granting of US patent 6,788,011 to Boston-based manufacturer, Color Kinetics. The patent appears to give Color Kinetics ownership in the US market of any control of two or more colour-changing LEDs for illumination purposes - something which has caused great concern among lighting professionals.

In a meeting organized by Super Vision International and Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd in October, over 30 lighting manufacturers pledged their support to this group, which calls itself 'The LED Alliance' and is calling upon all interested parties to submit any related prior art on the subject of colour mixing. Specifically, the call is for prior art information dating prior to August 1997 on the following applications:

1. Utilization of Pulse Width Modulation with LEDs; 2. Utilization

UK - A demonstration of the latest in LED lighting production technology was given by MCL-NEC on the Suzuki stand at this year's International Motor Cycle and Scooter Show. Held at the NEC, it formed the centrepiece of an integrated sound, lighting and video package provided by the turnkey service company.

Working for production company Big Blue Media Ltd., LD Rob Merrilees designed the stand around MCL-NEC's new inventory of Color Kinetics ColorBlaze 48's and ColorBlast 12's, using 18 of the former and 24 of the latter.

Switzerland - The Compulite Vector Blue console was used on the Miss Switzerland contest staged on 18 September 2004 in the TPC studios in Zurich, broadcasted live. Show lighting was controlled with two Compulite Vector Blue consoles linked in master / slave mode (the second console supported by Feiner Lichttechnik Germany). The show had also been pre-programmed with Capture visualizer software which was then used during the live show.

Other lighting equipment used included; two Compulite Emix II converters, three Compulite splitters, 26 Mac 550, 17 Mac 2000 Wash, 10 Mac 2000 Performance, 02 Mac 2000 Profile, 06 VL 1000. UK - Working with two key suppliers, Northern Light and New Box, Kelsey, the leading manufacturer and supplier of professional audio and lighting cables, has taken a central role in the infrastructure for The Performance Academy, the new further education music, performing arts and media centre opened by Newcastle College, and the largest of its kind in the UK.

One of the first such centres for mixed media studies, the building provides accommodation for all Newcastle College's music, performing arts and mixed media courses. It contains a 250-seat flexible theatre, a music venue for an audience of 500, a 60-seat studio theatre, 10 recording studios, rehearsal rooms, television studio, drama and dance studios, and a radio station.
