Germany - GLP German Light Products has announced a closer partnership with its German distributor and neighbour, B&K Braun, based in Karlsbad.

In addition to being the German distributor for GLP, Green Hippo and Global Truss, B&K Braun has also been manufacturing and distributing a full range of architectural and entertainment lighting fixtures for many years themselves. The new partnership will see the B&K Braun range of products being made available to all of GLP's customers with immediate effect.

GLP and B&K Braun are located next to each other in the southern German town of Karlsbad and product distribution will take place from a brand new headquarters in the town where sales administration and logistics will be located.

USA - Designed as a grandiose and captivating live performance, Luminosity, Powered by Pepsi lights up the massive set and stage in Celebration Plaza at Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio, the second-oldest operating amusement park in the United States.

The 35-minute interactive experience is billed as the perfect way for visitors to end a day of excitement at the park this summer. Italy - Lighting designer Aldo Visentin is using his own Jands Vista S1 lighting console running the next generation Vista v2 software, plus two Vista M1 Wings, to control lighting for tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Visentin's creative relationship with Bocelli started in 2006 and this tour's natural innovative design contains lots of subtleties, with slow colour changes and no visible movement. It is operated completely 'live' every night using the Vista's powerful visual interface and just a few pre-programmed presets. This allows Aldo the creative freedom to reflect the spirit of the evening in the lighting, and flow organically with the mood of the set.

Rather non-conventionally, a typical Bocelli tour will feature two or three shows a week over a three week period - often on different continents. Instead of touring a production lighting system, lighting equipment is normally hired

UK - On 19 July the Olympic torch arrived at Leeds Castle, ready to start the next morning in Maidstone. A concert and film show was staged in Mote Park, Maidstone, attended by thousands of local people who were eager to take part in the celebrations.

SRD Group of Tonbridge, Kent used six of MilTec's LEDHead 324W moving head washes for main stage. Stuart Roberts, MD of SRD Group commented, "We chose the MTM-324W to replace our ageing discharge lamp moving head wash lights and are delighted with the purchase. They are lighter and probably brighter than the units they are replacing, and yet consume a fraction of the electricity, which saves on cabling as well. The built in programs work well and are useful when time is short to get a good looking show up and running.

UK - UBM Built Environment has announced development plans for the ARC Show. The 2013 edition will see the show re-locate to London's ExCeL as an integral part of UBM's May Design Series to take place from 19-21 May.

For the first time, say the organisers, four separate, focused events (The ARC Show, Interiors LDN, kbb LDN and DX) will combine to serve the broad sourcing needs of these key specifiers.

Israel - Robe continues to be a popular choice of moving light for the leading Israeli TV shows, and especially with one of the country's top lighting designers Ofer Jacobi - who specifies Robe constantly for his busy schedule of productions.

This recently includes the popular Fly On The Millions quiz show, recorded in Studio 4 of GG Studios, Neverelan, Jerusalem, the country's main TV production facility. This show is in its third series and will soon be rolled out in the US via NBC and also in Europe.

Contestants answering questions wrong are spectacularly dumped from the set via a trap door opening beneath their podium. The show is broadcast on prime time Friday night, on Channel 10.

Lighting is being supplied by Danor Rental and the Robe count includes 20 Robin 300E Beams, 10 ColorWash 700E ATs, six ColorBeam 2500s and 10 ColorSpot 1200E ATs.

UK - The London 2012 Opening Ceremony saw an animated display of images from Crystal stretching across the entire expanse of audience seating from the arena itself to the edge of the Olympic stadium. Bringing Danny Boyle's vision of audience inclusiveness to life, the spectators became part of the action.

Viewers were also wowed by a range of images including a computer generated image of the birth of the internet, which started on the field of play and shot outwards into the audience and beyond. The giant video screen was made up of small paddle-shaped Pixel Tablets designed by Tait Technologies, each attached to a seat in the stadium and bearing 9 full colour pixels arranged in a square.

UK - City Theatrical's SHoW DMX Neo wireless DMX system was chosen to control the lighting on the most iconic of all symbols of the London Olympics, the Olympic rings on London's Tower Bridge.

Over one billion people worldwide watched on Friday, 27 July, 2012 as the Olympic torch passed under the bridge by speedboat on the way to Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremonies. Television crews worldwide will use the Tower Bridge and its rings as a backdrop for their Olympic coverage throughout the games.

Lighting designer Adam Bassett specified over 90 moving lights and a variety of other gear that required four universes of SHoW DMX wireless DMX to control, along with panel antennas with custom antenna extension cables, with Transceivers built into equipment racks. The SHoW DMX equipment was provided and installed by Neg Earth.

UK - Nick Gray of creative lighting and design practice Renegade combined his skills and experience in the disciplines of entertainment and architectural lighting to produce a stunning, dramatic lightshow for the recent Tree of Light performances, which were part of the London 2012 Festival

Gray was asked to light a spectacular tree set structure created by Block 9 (Gideon Berger and Steve Gallagher) for the event - which toured to three outdoor venues in Reading, Oxford (as part of the Olympic Torch relay) and Henley.

Block9 and Renegade have collaborated on many previous festivals and events, and Gray was, "Very excited to take up the challenge"

UK - Viper, the new high-performance moving light from Martin Professional, has arrived at entertainment lighting specialist White Light, and is available for hire.

Designed around a new 1000-watt HID source, the Mac Viper's light output exceeds many 1200-watt lighting fixtures, with Viper both more compact and faster moving than those higher-wattage fixtures while also using less energy.

The Viper Profile spotlight offers a 10-44 degree zoom, two 5-position indexing/rotating gobo wheels, an effect wheel, CMY colour mixing plus a CTO correction wheel, eight slot colour wheel, iris, strobe, four-facet prism and soft frost. Viper also features a 140mm front lens, giving great "fat beam" looks when the fixture is viewed front-on.

UK - Due to be displayed at PLASA 2012 (Earls Court, 9-12 September) the Ghost is the latest stylish lectern from The Lectern Company which designs and manufactures upmarket lecterns. The company has widened its portfolio with the introduction of an acrylic lectern to complement its successful alloy range.

The Ghost has been designed so that the built-in features which have made Lectern Company lecterns so popular have not been compromised, says the company. It has a 7" HD monitor, shock mounted microphone sockets, cable management system and an LED uplighter. These have all been carefully incorporated into the slim and elegant design.

The Ghost will be on stand 1-H11 at PLASA 2012 together with The Lectern Company's other designs.

UK - France TV Sport, a division of France Television, has rented 48 ETC Source Four LED Lustr+ Zoom 25-50° luminaires from Dushow, fitting out a temporary TV studio on the north bank of the River Thames for the duration of the London Olympic Games.

Florian Allain, Dushow's technical director, explains, "We needed to use LED as we wanted to keep an eye on our power usage - we only have a limited amount available, and we wanted to get the most out of it. So with that in mind, we did a shoot out with a number of fixtures, concluding that ETC's Source Four LED, which was demonstrated to us by ETC distributor Avab Transtechnik France, was the most suitable for us.

UK - SGM Lighting has expanded its distribution arrangements in the UK, appointing A.C. Entertainment Technologies Ltd (AC-ET) to work in parallel with existing distributor, LED Projects.

"We see nothing but positives in this decision," said SGM CEO Peter Johansen. "These will be the only official dealers for SGM products in the UK and Ireland, and between them they will be able to increase penetration in all SGM's core markets."

USA - Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures are hitting the road with the North American summer tour of iconic rock band Motley Crue, which is co-headlining tour dates across the country with Kiss. A complement of approximately 90 Sharpys have joined the Motley Crue /Kiss lighting inventory.

"I first saw Sharpys at the Ultra Music Fest almost two years ago," says lighting director Mike Cooper. "The lighting designer had a huge Clay Paky rig and a row of Sharpys on the stage, and I was blown away. I thought I had to use them."

Since then Cooper has deployed Sharpys on the Godsmack/Staind tour and Motley Crue appearances in Europe. "I love them: Their speed is awesome, and they can cut through anything," he reports. "We have a full rig of 1500-watt lights, but the Sharpys just cut through everything."

USA - Arguably the most recognizable landmark of the US's West coast, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge recently celebrated its 75th birthday. Thanks to wysiwyg, from CAST Software of Toronto, Canada, tens of thousands of spectators experienced the light show and pyro celebration as a complete surprise.

Event producer Don Richards of Foghorn Creative brought in San Francisco-based Lightswitch with lighting designer Norm Schwab to help organise the event, along with Prelite of San Francisco to design the lighting concept. Working with Syncrolite for lighting the bridge, Schwab and Prelite created a moving tribute with historical significance. The final effect was reminiscent of the Scintillator, a vintage lighting technique that was introduced to the city at the Pan Pacific Exposition in 1915.

USA - The PBS National Memorial Day Concert, honouring the service and sacrifice of service personnel, has become an American tradition. Co-hosts Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds) and Gary Sinise (CSI:New York) were joined this year by an all-star line-up on the West Lawn of the US Capitol, including dignitaries, celebrated actors and renowned musical artists, for a night of remembrance.

Staged by Capital Concerts, the nation's leading producer of live patriotic television shows, in order to produce these large-scale live outdoor television events its staff are joined by a dedicated crew of hundreds of professionals. On the technical side these included lighting designer Bob Barnhart, of Full Flood Inc, and lighting director, David Grill, who chose large quantities of GLP impression LED fixtures in their armoury of effects. UK - At this year's T in the Park one of the hottest acts to see was Professor Green on the NME stage. Twenty LEDHead Par144Q luminaries were used as part of a matrix to provide back lighting and visual effects. The 144Q is fitted with 18x 8W quadcolour LEDs in a rugged parcan housing, available in black and chrome.

The units were supplied by SM Lighting Ltd of Glasgow. Scott Munro, MD of SM Lighting commented, "We were very happy to use the LEDhead 144Qs on the outdoor NME stage at T in the Park for the Professor Green set. The brightness is ideal for day time shows and came across well on television. They had just returned from The Proclaimers' Scottish tour, where power was an issue in some venues. Since buying them we have been very happy with the brightness and reliability and also, of course, the price."

UK - The two companies that made event history by developing the digital artistry and technology behind the London 2012 Opening Ceremonies 'human-powered' video screen signed a global partnership agreement on Saturday 28 July. The partners are both behind the digital magic that enveloped the audience at Friday night's performance and plan to build on their joint offering to create immersive experiences for events worldwide.

Tait Technologies specialises in combining video and scenic technologies and provided the technology behind the largest ever video screen at the Opening Ceremony, which literally engulfed the audience.
