UK - In August 2010, Unusual Rigging was approached by London's Victoria and Albert Museum to solve two rigging issues. The V&A's major exhibition galleries have plenty of headroom, but, historically, prior to Unusual's solution, it had not been viable to hang anything due to a number of factors including restricted access.

Project manager for Unusual, Robin Elias, explains, "We were asked to design a system which would facilitate two things: the first was a way of displaying two 10m x 15m theatre back-cloths by Picasso, in the North Court Gallery for six months for the Museum's major exhibition Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes 1909-1929. The second was to create some way to facilitate the hanging of lighting and other electrical equipment for future exhibitions in the North Court gallery.

UK - It's not often that you contact a company to make a purchase, then 19 years later whilst sourcing replacements, find yourself dealing with exactly the same person that you dealt with all those years ago. This is exactly what happened when Northern Light in Edinburgh decided it was time to upgrade their hoists.

Initially they had bought the two GIS EM electric chain hoists from John Jones (now of LTM) back in 1992. The hoists were linked using an extended bar to allow lifting of normal loads using either hoist or long loads using both hoists together. These hoists are required to raise goods from floor level to two mezzanine levels up to 10m high. Following the original site survey, two GIS EM 500kg capacity electric chain hoists were recommended with electric travel trolleys, as they needed to have fast lifting to speed up the loading process. The hoists were delivered and

Her seven-date sell-out Stand Up tour stopped at Academy venues in Glasgow, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin, as well as London's Shepherds Bush Empire and finished up at Belfast's Mandela Hall in April. The colour-changing LED tubed lettering spelling the star's name was the centrepiece of the stage set.

LD Louis Oliver approached LS-Live to create the LED RGB tubed sign based on the shape of Jessie J's logo, which had to be fully controllable by DMX 512 and patched into an Avolites Tiger Touch. Despite time pressures, Oliver said the end result was "fantastic".

"I've never worked with LS-Live on the custom creation of equipment before," he commented, "but they are honest people with honest

UK - Unusual has completed work at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, for the musical production of <>I>Shrek. Work included hanging over three tons of speakers on the front of house truss, and around 18 tons of set.

Simon Stone, project manager for Unusual Rigging reports, "The most interesting and challenging part of the project from our point of view was working out how to hang so many pieces of set, including over 40 cloths, with so little weight in the house counterweight sets. The theatre has an extremely old counterweight system which can only take up to 125kg in each cradle; an Unusual Ladderbeam on its own weighs that much, so we knew we had a lot of work to do.

"For the three flown pieces that weigh over 1400kg each, we replaced the theatre counterweight cradles with Unusual's, each of which can take up to 1.5 tons. But the budget wouldn't have stretched to
