France - One of the highlights of the summer on the French Riviera has been the reopening of St. Tropez' famous nightclub, Papagayo, which enjoyed a golden era in the 1970's when such people as Eddie Barclay and Brigitte Bardot soaked up the atmosphere. More recently the club has hosted the likes of P. Diddy, Bono and Bruce Willis. Located right on the harbour it offers magnificent views of the bay, and now it has set out to recapture its bygone splendour.

Owner Fabienne Malortigue has spent €2m in creating a completely new infrastructure - including a potent new sound system - and has brought in new director, Thierry Fontaine from The Loft in Lyon to add weight to the operation, which today offers an eclectic music mix to an 18-25-year-old crowd.

The venue contacted its long-term audio consultant, Nice-based integrators Perfec'son to upgrade the technical infrastructure. The

UK - Back to their original line-up as a trio, Ash have been touring their latest Twilight of the Innocents album in the UK and Europe, with Adlib Audio providing the production and sound engineer Lance Reynolds delivering the house mix on the Soundcraft Vi6 digital platform.

Reynolds, who has been piloting the band's house mix for the past four years, was delighted to find a Vi6 already in both the FOH and monitor positions when the band started their UK leg proper with a four-night stint at Koko in London, as the experienced sound engineer had already worked with the desk in his native Chicago - at Randy Flaws' Windy City Sound and Lighting.

"Randy got hold of the first couple of Vi6's for touring use in the States around a year ago, and when I'm back home I do work for that company. So I had the opportunity to get a feel for the Vi6 before the FX cards came alon

Austria - Biamp Systems reports that two of Austria's host stadiums for the upcoming UEFA European Championships have recently installed audio systems featuring Biamp's AudiaFLEX components. Completed by Vienna's MOCOM Communications, the new upgrades elevate the venues to a level on par with some of the most advanced facilities in the game.

The design and integration for Innsbruck's Tivoli Neu Stadium was an upgrade to existing hardware, while the system implemented for Klagenfurt's Woerthersee Stadium was built from scratch. Both projects were managed by MOCOM's Harald Steindl.

"AudiaFLEX consistently sounds great and that's the primary requirement for me and my customers," Steindl remarked. "With such important events, it's also critical that the sound system be as reliable as possible or someone will lose business."

Both systems, though different desi

Bermuda - Two Allen & Heath iLive-144 digital consoles provided FOH and monitor mixing duties for the 13th Annual Bermuda Music Festival. Audio Incorporated from Roselle Park, NJ ran sound for the internationally renowned event.

"The iLive is probably the most flexible digital console I've seen," says Mike Sinclair, co-owner of Audio Incorporated, and one of the engineering crew handling FOH mixing duties. "It feels like it was designed by people who mix sound, rather than engineers who don't use these systems on a regular basis - and that understanding really shows in the user interface and front-panel features.

"We have provided the iLive for various events," continues Sinclair, "but the Bermuda Music Festival was my first time handling live mixing with the console - it didn't take long for me to become very familiar with the system. The templat

UK - When Future 3000 plc purchased Censo - Candu Leisure's flagship Bournemouth venue - they wanted to establish the most potent dance system on the south coast.

Both the operating company and their audio contractors Complete Production Solutions Group (CPS) have a long history of working with proprietary Martin Audio dance systems, and as the new venue (to be named Crank) was taking shape, Future 3000 MD Richard Carr could already see the opportunity to replicate his epochal dance brand Slinky by again employing the Martin Audio principle to boost a new Friday night called Bedbug

.With Armand van Helden booked for the opening night, Martin Audio's national sales manager Simon Bull proposed a custom stack system, with raw aggression as its imprint.

CPS director Richard Colegate had already seen how effectively a perimeter of six carefully-optimised stacks had

Germany - After thorough tests and a shoot-out with the final three selected systems, Mark Liese and the Megaforce team from Weingarten, Germany have chosen Alcons.

With a substantial amount of Alcons pro-ribbon line-arrays, Megaforce have become the latest The Ribbon Network member in Germany. The initial order contained 36 x LR16, 12 x LR14, ALC2 and ALC4 amplified loudspeaker controllers, all fitted with Digital Drive Processors (DDP), including all (transport and flying) logistics.

Mark Liese, MD of Megaforce comments: "Alcons offers us a compact, high-resolution, full-range capable system, which we can use for almost, if not all, applications we encounter. It is absolutely convincing in terms of sound, handling and overall built-quality."

Sweden - Andreas Karlsson sound rental company, located near Gothenburg, is one of the first in Europe to invest in Nexo's new Geo S12 tangent array system. The initial system order will give them the capability to handle audiences of up to 4,000, but proprietor Andreas Karlsson is already planning to buy additional boxes in the new year.

Established 15 years ago in Vara, in the southern part of Sweden, Andreas Karlsson's rental company is particularly well-known in corporate circles, where they handle the lion's share of big staff parties for client companies such as Carlsberg. Always working in live music, their projects take them mainly into clubs and large sporting venues and arenas.

The arrival of the first Geo S12 system in Sweden has surprised clients and engineers. "On the first show, the band's sound engineer was pretty shocked," explained Andreas Karlsson.

UK - London's Royal Albert Hall has installed a new Meyer Sound M Series loudspeaker system. As part of a £100 million refurbishment effort, Surrey, England-based Sound By Design recently designed and installed the new in-house sound system for the venue's famously echoey main hall based on arrays of Meyer Sound M1D ultra-compact and M2D compact curvilinear array loudspeakers.

The new system features 10 M2D cabinets, 20 M1D cabinets, two M1D-Sub ultra-compact subwoofers, and one M2D-Sub compact subwoofer. Six UPA-1P compact wide coverage loudspeakers provide coverage to the seating surrounding either side of the hall's famed pipe organ. A Galileo loudspeaker management system handles system drive and processing.

The design collaboration between Sound By Design's principal engineer Phil Wright and systems engineer Dave Shepherd resulted in a system that can be reworked in

Ascon Trading has recently completed a whole series of fixed installations, including sports centres in Odense and Hjallerup, a metro shopping centre in Aalborg, a cultural centre in Nibe and swimming baths in Ringsted, in each case employing components from Dynacord. Morten Larsen, Ascon's marketing manager MI, says, "Dynacord enjoys the same kind of reputation here as BMW or Audi in the automobile world. Like BMWs or Audis, Dynacord products are associated with high prices, but also with absolute reliability and real quality. And, at the present time, with the market increasingly flooded by cheap products from China, pe

UK - Sound designers Chris Full and Terry Jardine of London's Autograph Sound Recording set out to infuse new life into the UK tour of the classic musical Guys and Dolls. The touring production is a spin-off of the popular London West End revival that opened in June 2005.

Full knew that in order to put a new twist on an old standard, he would have to adjust the show's signature sound. "The director (Michael Grandage), music department, and I agreed that, since the musical is so well-known, we should approach this tour as a new piece of theatre," says Full. "This had a noticeable effect on the score, as we ended up with a very modern sound, but still retained the underpinnings of a classic big band. So, to reproduce the frequency range and SPL required, we needed a cabinet that could deal with a huge dynamic range."

UK - Show Hire, the Milford-based PA rental company, has made a significant investment in Electro-Voice loudspeaker systems in order to stay abreast of its increasing workload at outdoor events, notably high-profile equestrian competitions such as the Burghley and Badminton Horse Trials, and county shows.

Nick Chubb of Show Hire purchased a number of Electro-Voice Zx100T loudspeakers and PA2400T amplifiers from Shuttlesound, after a successful test-drive of the equipment at the Badminton Horse Trials earlier in the year. At Burghley, the new 100V line compact cabinets were mounted on poles around the large arena, where the dressage and show-jumping elements of the three-day eventing competition are staged, along with demonstrations, workshops and prize-giving ceremonies.

"Everything we do at Burghley is temporary," explains Nick Chubb. "We can't even concrete a

UK - Adlib Audio supplied their new Digidesign D-Show Venue live mixing console and new VerTec subs for The Fray, along with full audio production and crew for the band's recent UK Tour.

It was the first 'full Adlib experience' for The Fray's FOH and monitor engineers Mark Maher and Brian Joseph, and they were pleased with the results. James Neale looked after FOH and Richie Nicholson was on monitor duty. Joseph reports: "Richie and James are way above and beyond what we expected as crew - in terms of their knowledge, professionalism, hard work and total dedication to the job."

UK - A sophisticated new restaurant, which celebrates Barbara Hulanicki's iconic 1960's fashion boutique Biba, has opened in Bristol's burgeoning waterfront area.

Situated on Welsh Back, Bibas Lounge Bar & Restaurant has been created in authentic art deco style by owner Costa Kkolos, and incorporates genuine memorabilia from the original Carnaby Street boutique.

Among the chrome and beveled mirrors, which form part of the £550,000 spent in developing the new infrastructure, is the type of Martin Audio sound reinforcement system you might expect to see in any of the world's leading dance venues.

Trevor Brooks, who runs local pro audio specialists CPM, was brought in to carry out a site survey after Kkolos heard the Martin Audio system installed by the contractors at nearby Barcelona Bar. The CPM proprietor and his freelance sound engineer Alan Crane knew immediately how

UK - SSE London has completed the installation of a multi-zone, multi-purpose sound reinforcement system at The Society, a new venue in Northampton which eases gracefully from gastro-pub at lunchtime to nightclub in the evening. An all-Nexo design provides the appropriate transition from background music to full-on dance floor sound.

The Society is a new venture from James Morgan of the Brittania Property Corporation, which already operates a number of venues, but this is the first of a new breed. According to Morgan, the aim is "to do something different to everything else we do. It will still offer the gastro food and fine wine that we are known for, but it will be the first of the Society Bar/Kitchen Venue brand."

It's also the first venture outside London, appealing to the well-heeled young demographic of Northampton, just 90 minutes north of the capital. Morgan

Austria - From 23-25 August, the mountains around Kitzbühel were the setting for Hansi Hinterseer's sixth Fanwanderung, in which over 6,000 of the Austrian Volksmusik star's fans accompanied him on a hike in the mountains. Since the event is intended as a celebration of the joys not only of nature but also of music, the Fieberbrunn-based production company Murdock Music Entertainment was engaged to install sound reinforcement systems at each of the three stations at which the procession made a halt.

At the top station of the Hahnenkamm, the 1,668m mountaintop jumping-off point for the hair-raising downhill ski event, Murdock installed a system including EV Xi-2123 enclosures and Xsubs.

For the traditional mountainside mass in the Hahnenkamm chapel, EV XLD enclosures were installed. At the Ehrenbachsee, a lake at an altitude of 1,802m, Hinterseer gave a concert with his
