PLASA 05 saw the introduction of the 5.8 GHz frequency range to compliment the established 2.4 GHz frequencies that eDMX currently works at. eDMX is now the only system on the market which allows the user to send the signal wirelessly at both 2.4 and 5.8GHz - to ensure connectivity at all times.

PLASA 05 also saw the launch of the new mDMX system that will be available from Avolites in the New Year. mDMX currently allows for up to four universes of DMX to be modulated down the mains cable up to 400m. dAFTdATA expect to be able to increase the capacity in the new year in addition to supporting video over mains as well.

USA - Rock Star: INXS - this summer's hottest new reality series - teamed Australian rockers INXS with reality TV guru Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Apprentice), and followed the band's search for a new lead singer. The show combined unscripted drama, performance-driven competition and used weekly contestant elimination to decide a winner who would join INXS for their next studio endeavour and world tour.

As part of the show, the competition gave finalists an opportunity to record a single with the band in Los Angeles-based Westlake Studios. UK - PLASA has announced the launch of a new National Rigging Award, designed to give riggers across all sectors of the industry a recognized framework by which their knowledge and expertise can be measured.

Initiated by the rigging sector, who looked to PLASA to further develop the template for a National Rigging Certificate, the Award has become vital in a climate where there is a growing focus on health and safety, and an increasing expectation from the insurance sector.

For the last 10 months, PLASA has been working with government bodies and members of the rigging community on the development of the Certificate, a consultation process which has been underpinned by the formation of the PLASA Rigging Advisory Group.

The company offered the band the use of its yard in North London to conduct the sound check, enabling them to perform in Covent Garden where they subsequently launched their new album, Wonderland.

Chris Hill, managing director of Wigwam Hire, which is handling sound for the band's forthcoming tour, says: "We were rehearsing at John Henry's for the tour, but when it was decided that the band would play in Covent Garden to launch their new album, we realized we needed somewhere outdoors to test the levels. I called my friends at VDC and they offered to lend us their yard. It worked brilliantly. If it hadn't been for VDC we'd have been stuck."

UK - The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London has purchased a complete L Acoustics MTD coaxial system. Primarily for use in its Lindbury Theatre, the system will also be utilized in other main rooms within the Opera House.

The system consists of four MTD115b and 14 MTD108a, amplified by LA17a and LA48a power amplifiers. The decision by the Royal Opera House to invest in L-Acoustics was made after extensive listening tests, involving other high end market brands. The terminal has been developed in to a multi purpose venue called 'Event Dock' which includes a Museum along with various other corporate event and exhibition facilities.
