Germany - The recent Musik Produktiv fair in Ibbenburen saw the official appointment of A audio as the new distributor for KV2 Audio products in Germany. Providing the main PA and monitors for Event Stage Number One, the KV2 system played host to a varied line-up Roland keyboard demonstrations, various live bands, percussion workshops, and a demonstration by Michael Angelo Batio, allegedly the fastest guitarist in the world, who thundered his way through many rock classics.

Representing A audio was Freddy Thalmann, who worked closely with George Krampera and Jonathan Reece-Farren of KV2 to ensure the whole event ran smoothly. Thalmann is no stranger to George Krampera's loudspeaker designs, having come from the stable of EAS, where prior to his appointment with A audio, he provided technical sales and support for RCF and Mackie industrial products.

Germany - As part of complete renovations, both Theatre Heilbronn and Theatre Duisburg in Germany have taken delivery of a DiGiCo D5 56EX. Having first seen the console at Tonmeister 2002, Theatre Heilbronn immediately scheduled an in-house demo, which also took advantage of DiGiCo's German distributor being in the theatre's hometown. One of the theatre's main requests was for a flexible and easy-to-use system, which still covered a comprehensive set of tasks. The analogue feel of the D5's touch-screens, with dedicated hardware built around them and the well-designed snapshot system, made an immediate impression, say the company.

Theatre Heilbronn's D5 configuration includes three racks with 104 inputs and 74 outputs and runs with 96 DSP mixing channels, plus internal effects and output processing channels. The theatre's head of sound, Frank Bürger, says: "Within a matter

UK - Simple sound-wise, but intensely artistic, the recent performance by the Merce Cunningham dance ensemble in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern produced an inverted take on movement and music.

The three musicians up on the gallery, out of sight of the dancers, were required to respond to the dancer's movements, conveyed by CCTV, and play subsequently. This in turn was a live response to the Olafur Eliasson installation 'Weather' (see Lighting&Sound International magazine, November 2003). It's a thin line between cutting-edge art and plain conceit - some may find such a performance fanciful - but most visitors were intrigued.

The Turbine Hall is an unfriendly environment for the sound fraternity. Even before you put sound energy into the room there is a permanent 50Hz hum caused by the National Grid sub-station still resident in the building: added to this are the spacious

UK / France - Le Maitre has announced the appointment of SFAT, of Chalon-sur-Saône, as its new distributor for France. SFAT, a well-established manufacturer of foam, snow, confetti and wind inflatables, has taken on the distribution of all of Le Maitre smoke products, including smoke machines, hazers, and bubble machines.

SFAT's Christophe de Lora commented: "We are very happy with this deal, we plan to launch the new Le Maitre machines at the SIEL show in Paris. We feel strongly that Le Maitre products fit perfectly well with our existing ranges."

Rick Wilson, Le Maitre's sales director added: "This is a positive move forward for us. I have always viewed the French market as a key constituent for the overall European marketplace. Our current pyro distributor, JP (Pyrofolies), will continue working with pyro, with both companies supplying each other. In all, a

UK - The smash-hit musical from last Christmas, Trevor Nunn's Royal National Theatre production of Anything Goes, has now transferred to the West End - and DHA Lighting has again been involved with making lighting designer David Hersey's vision for the show a reality.

At the National, DHA's Wyatt Enever and Steve Larkins carried out the careful pre-distortion of the images projected onto the show's cyclorama. The projection - particularly the scrolling image of New York as the ship on which the show is set leaves dock - proved so successful that it was expanded for the West End production.

However, the changes required the DHA team to produce newly pre-distorted images to suit the different shape of cyclorama and projector positions at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane - one of London's largest stages, but here filled with John Gunter's recreation of an Atlantic liner. Gunte

Australia - December saw Resolution X install a record nine separate Christmas lighting displays in various locations all over Melbourne. Since its beginnings in 1998, the company has developed a reputation for delivering innovative displays on-time and on-budget has seen the number of Christmas clients steadily grow, with many commissioning multiple installations in separate locations.

2003's installations ranged from the 1km-long Burke Road, Camberwell display to a single tree in Victoria Gardens, Prahran. Many of these shows were run from Enttec's DMXPlayback unit, a compact DMX show recorder, which can be configured to either start a particular show on power-up, and loop through until the power is turned off again, or trigger up to 26 different shows via RS232.

By far the largest installation, the Burke Road, Camberwell show featured giant custom-built panels depicting va

UK - It was a royal extravaganza dampened by blustery, rainy weather as Queen Elizabeth II christened the world's largest ocean liner on Thursday 8 January in Southampton. In front of 2,000 invited guests, she launched the £500 million Queen Mary 2 - the first liner for transatlantic and worldwide routes to enter service since the QE2 in 1969.

Although the Queen was protected from the strong winds and downpours by a temporary structure, hundreds of Southampton residents, barred from the dockside by tight security around the Ship, braved the elements to watch the ceremony on large screens in the nearby park. Weather conditions were fierce and health and safety regulations prevented the rigging of the stage and other equipment until the eleventh hour when the winds finally calmed. Despite the weather, the afternoon was a colourful, lively spectacle thanks to an array of imaginat

UK - White Light Events reports the completion of an extremely busy Christmas period, which has seen it providing lighting to some of London's most prestigious party venues.

For the third consecutive year, the company was invited to design and supply the lighting for the parties and events held at Coram's Fields in north London, managed by European Events. This year's parties were themed around the Winter Solstice: lighting designer Mike Robertson responded by creating a fantasy world using a mixture of lavenders and blues to embellish the themed environment.

European Events were also managing a new marquee structure in the grounds of London Zoo, themed as the Latin Quarter. Here White Light Events used image projection, haze and colour washes of vivid reds, pinks and ambers to create a highly charged atmosphere for the parties' guests. The lighting system was also flexible en

Norway - Visual act has been awarded the contract to modernize the flying system for the Norwegian Theatre in Oslo. The work involves replacing the drive electronics for 109 fly bars and point hoists. The Visual act Stage Control System to be installed will include three operator desks and redundant servers and positioning computers. One of the operator desks will be wireless for use on the stage during set-up and in the house during rehearsals.

In selecting a supplier, the theatre referred to Visual act's flexibility and forward-looking technical features. The system is open and can easily be expanded to control under stage machinery or other elements. The user inteface will be specially adapted to fit the theatre's working routines.

The current computer system, installed in 1985, is still effective even by modern standards. It allows for the simultaneous operation of any num

Germany - With origins dating back to the early 17th century and almost 40,000 students, the University of Hamburg is Germany's fifth largest University, and prides itself as Germany's "gateway to the world of Science."

As part of the University's ongoing refurbishment programme, ShowService GmbH, the German distributor for Australian pro audio manufacturer ARX Systems, has now completed the supply and installation of two new audio systems for the University's ESA B and AS auditoriums.

The 5.1 audio system in the cavernous ESA B auditorium comprises five SPL 12 self-powered loudspeakers providing Left-Centre-Right and stereo surround program and a single SPL 18 self-powered subwoofer for low frequency reinforcement. A single SPL 8H compact self-powered loudspeaker was installed in the lecturer's desk as a listen monitor/foldback monitor.

Spain - Reed Exhibitions Iberia, the Spanish and Portuguese division of the worldwide exhibition organizer Reed Exhibitions, has decided to postpone Scenotech, the international stage technology and entertainment exhibition, scheduled for 21-23 March 2004 in the Campo de las Naciones Convention Centre, Madrid.

The company says the decision has been taken because, with under three months to go before the event, the organization does not have sufficient critical mass and quality to ensure the fair would be on the same high-quality level as its many other shows. By postponing Scenotech, Reed Exhibitions claims it is also "responding to the demand of major business and institutional agents in the sector, who are complaining that there are too many international events organized for this year."

Reed Exhibitions had previously re-scheduled the event from the original dates

USA - VLPS Lighting Services is providing the lighting and production services for singer Josh Groban's first international tour. Since his debut in 2001, Groban has successfully crossed over to the pop charts from the opera and classical markets. The 40-plus-date tour, promoting his second studio album, "Closer," begins today at Boise, Idaho, and is already sold-out.

Lighting designer Anne Militello worked closely with director Daniel Ezralow, set designer Bruce Rodgers, and projection designer Amy Shock to create a show concept and concert style for a new artist who has never toured before. "This was definitely a more formal presentation than a loosely-based concept," commented Militello. "The look is clean, precise, and all the lights and truss are in straight lines producing a very simple and formal look. The scenery is very basic, employing mainly

UK - ShowCAD's Artist has recently been installed as the architectural lighting controller for the gymnasium in the latest Amida Health Club in Hampton, near Twickenham, by Atmospheric Ltd, a leading entertainment, media and lighting solutions provider for the health and fitness leisure industry.

Artist has been commissioned to control the Atmospheric installation of the Brown Box AV product, Colorflow - a 1.5m long three-channel DMX-controlled RGB cold-cathode uplighter. Over 150 Colorflow units were utilized in this latest installation, enabling the projection of both full colour washes and more intricate multi-coloured effects over the roof of the venue.

Artist was employed for this task because of its built-in matrix functions not found on many other controllers, making programming such large matrices extremely easy. Lines, chases, cascades, washes, rainbows and many other

UK - Creative Laser Services purchased 130 Alkalite Octopod 30 LED colour changers from distributors Lighting Effects Distribution - and built them into the stage set at London Weekend Television (LWT) for Graham Norton's recent Channel 4 series, V Graham Norton. Richard Jarvis says the production team at So Television wanted to incorporate some visual excitement into the walkway down which the guests are escorted - and so he suggested Octopod: "We demoed the product for them on set and they liked the fact that Octopod could change colour and run chases. There are a lot of LED products now on the market but we like Octopod for its price and reliability."

His company is also starting to use Octopod 30s in its club installation work - recently fitting 64 pieces into Mercy in Norwich. Octopod 30 is an eight-head distributed intelligent LED colour-chasing system and

UK - Mute Records' in-house recording studio, The Instrument, has teamed up with FX Rentals to provide flexible location recording packages for commercial hire. The package comes complete with highly experienced engineers to operate and oversee the equipment and carry out the project through to a professional stereo or 5.1 live mix in the studio.

"We've always recorded our own artists live, with 5.1 mixes, live albums, downloads and extra tracks in mind," says MJ, who heads up The Instrument. "Once we started achieving quality results we realized that if it worked for us, it would work for other record companies. One of the key reasons we teamed up with FX is because they are so adaptable and reliable, meaning we can tailor the set-up to each gig, and know the equipment will always be of the highest quality."

FX Rentals and Mute have enjoyed a close relatio

The Netherlands - DPA Microphone's Dutch distributor TransTec provided long-term client Vanderlinden Geluid with a small but crucial order of components from the Danish manufacturer's range recently. Vanderlinden, which specializes in specifying and hiring music PA systems, was contracted for nine sold-out performances of the opera 'Amadeiro', staged to celebrate the 121st anniversary of the annual Oeteldonk carnival in 's-Hertogenbosch. As the opera was being produced on a budget, a twin mic solution using one beltpack was agreed upon, creating the need for a flexible mounting solution.

Vanderlinden constructed eight specially designed mounting devices capable of holding two microphones instead of the standard single one. This enabled each of eight choir members to be mounted with two DPA 4061 miniature microphones in a PZM configuration, one chest-worn and the other positioned

USA - Between 29 January and 1 February 2004, the new Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles will host an exciting collaboration between the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the internationally acclaimed Théàtre de Complicité. Entitled Strange Poetry: Berlioz and the Chemistry of Dreams, the piece has been created as a collaboration between Complicité and the orchestra following an invitation to Complicité from the orchestra's music director, Esa-Pekka Salonen. The show is based around the orchestra's performance of two of Berlioz's works, Lélio and the Symphonie Fantastique.

As in their acclaimed show The Elephant Vanishes, the Complicité team have opted to incorporate video projection into the new show, working with Canadian video designer Francis Laporte, perhaps best known for his work with Cirque du Soleil on their show

UK - Stagetec Distribution has supplied the recently released Compulite Vector lighting console to lighting operator Bill Peachment for the BBC's new Top of the Pops. Vector, say Compulite, is the first Lighting Workstation that lets the operator work the way they want to work. It has a dual processor system which provides the operator with a user-friendly windows environment to work in, while ensuring optimum stability and speed.

Lighting director Dave Davey says: "Returning to TOTP, I was keen to ask Bill Peachment to work as my assistant on the show and to take control of the automated lighting operation. Bill and I had a discussion about the best way of controlling and programming large rigs of lights of all types and as always my main concern was to achieve good results quickly and efficiently. Bill suggested we try the Vector. Having used Compulite Sparks, Microns and

UK - Now a popular venue for product launches and functions, Hangar One, part of the Aviator Hotel, is a converted World War II aircraft hangar overlooking the busy grass runways of Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire, one of the finest airfields in the country. The refashioning of the hangar into a conference venue included the installation of a Martin Audio sound system, designed and fitted by Middlesex Sound & Lighting.

Originally, the building consisted of three smaller hangars, built in 1941 to house planes used to train RAF pilots. Soon after, it was demolished and reconstructed as a single large blister hangar, with an all-metal frame.

"Acoustically, the hangar presents some difficulties," explains Lance Bromhead of Middlesex Sound & Lighting. The main hall is 110ft x 70ft with a ceiling height of 19ft in the centre and 8ft at the sides. "Together with

UK/USA - In a co-production with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, directed by Neil Armstrong, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sweeney Todd made his debut on the stage of the Royal Opera House in December last year. Finishing its run last week, it has had mixed fortunes, with the critics having given it a bashing on both sides of the Atlantic, firstly questioning whether Sweeney Todd is in fact an opera at all, and secondly whether it is appropriate for it to be gracing the stages of two of the mostly highly-revered opera houses in the world.

Critics aside, audiences were not deterred and the production played to packed houses for the majority of its run, with Brian Thompson's set design appearing to receive praise from all quarters. The play opens to a large cage, whose interior swiftly adapts to be a town square, a barber shop, a Victorian parlour or a lunatic asylum

Italy / China - Italian manufacturer Proel Sound Reinforcement has appointed Dah Chong Hong Ltd, based in Hong Kong, as its exclusive distributor for the territories of Hong Kong, China and Macao. The agreement was reached by Proel's export manager Roberto Mataloni and DCH sales manager Patrick Lau. Proel's chairman, Fabrizio Sorbi and Dah Chong Hong's general manager Kelvin Hui, have now signed the official contract of distribution.

We feel Proel Sound Reinforcement will gain a greater impact in the territories where DCH will operate".

The two companies have also agreed on the participation at the next Beijing Calm Show 2004, with a dedicated Pr

UK - PA Installations (PAI) and i-Vision have collaborated to design, specify and install a dynamic LED lighting scheme for Cardiff's 'Tower of Light' at the new Millennium Plaza entertainment complex. The Tower of Light is a six-storey, glass block stairwell, designed by architects The Burgess Partnership, and built by Taylor Woodrow Construction, and the illumination is part of a brief to ensure that Millennium Plaza becomes a modern 'destination' venue, and a local landmark.

The idea was to create an illuminated beacon to act like a magical, 21st century lighthouse, radiating interest and drawing people into the building - in addition to making a dramatic visual statement. Building owners Delancey approached PAI with the brief to make the tower come alive with an exciting lighting scheme. PAI's Paul Adams invited i-Vision's Geoff Jones to help realize the illumination of this
