USA - Barbra Streisand recently returned for a twenty-date tour across North America with guests Il Divo, the pop opera quartet, marking the singer's first live concert appearances since 1999. The vocal microphone of choice for the diva and Il Divo was the Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless handheld fitted with Neumann's KK 105 S capsule, while the 'popera' foursome also made use of Sennheiser's 3000 Series RF personal monitors.

FOH engineer and sound designer Bruce Jackson, who has mixed Streisand live for many years, reports that the Sennheiser/Neumann vocal mic won a shootout against competing systems. "I listened and compared it against some other mics that I was interested in," he says. "It worked out well."

Jackson, who was once front-of-house engineer for Elvis Presley and, for many years, Bruce Springsteen, was especially impressed with the strong RF perf

UK - The 31st Annual Vision Charity Ball has raised a total of over £100,000 for visually-impaired and dyslexic children. Themed as 'Carnival!', this year's event in the Great Room of the Grosvenor House was attended by nearly 1,000 guests, and, as usual, was energetically supported by professionals from the video, TV, production and broadcast industries.

With a visual presentation created by Skaramoosh, illustrating some of the good works of the Vision Charity in the past year, Chairman Larry Davis welcomed everyone to the party. Qatar - For the $190 million opening ceremony of the 15th Asian Games in the Khalifa Stadium, Doha, four grandMA full-size, four grandMA light and 22 NSPs for the 44 DMX universes were employed by lighting designers Fabrice Kebour and Andrew Doig and associate designer Steve Shipman.

Forty-five nations competed during fourteen days to win gold, silver and bronze medals. Network and Console Technician Paul Collison and programmers Jim Beagley, Romain Labat, Roger Ray and Maran Persoons did their very best to give the competitions a good start. They divided the grandMA system into four sessions: Alpha Spots and Conventionals; VL3000 spots, Cameleon Lyre and TP6 projectors; Searchlights; Mac 2K Washes. Each grandMA console had an identical console as a backup which was also used for pre-programming.

UK - The Killers are often described as the 'Best British band to have come out of America'. James Gebhard has been the band's front of house engineer since the spring of 2004 and, wherever possible, uses a combination of DiGiCo D5 Live and XTA processing for their live performances.

Presently, Gebhard is using a stripped down version of the D5 with 46 inputs and nine or 10 outputs for PA routing depending on requirements. "I want to try and get into the console's snapshots function more," continues Gebhard. "We have a lot of instruments on stage, but they're only used in specific songs and it would a lot easier and simpler between song changes if I used snapshots.

"I think the D5 sounds great. I took out a competitor's console in the States because it's part of the tools of the trade and you should learn what's out there. It sounds good, but not as good as

UK - SPS, one of the UK's largest live event companies, is extending into the IT rental market with the launch in January of its 'Event IT' division. In the build-up to the launch, the company has invested significant financial resource in the latest technology which it believes will enable it to compete aggressively against those currently leading the field.

To head up this new division SPS has appointed Robin Fell from Hamilton Rentals, where he was instrumental in helping develop the company to become the current leader of this sector. Fell will become head of Event IT and will responsible for devising and implementing a sales strategy that will meet the company's considerable sales target assigned for 2007.

Fell is highly well known within this sector, working for Mircorent before moving onto become PC/AV sales team leader at Hamilton Rental.

An unprecedented number of visitor registrations have been made, demonstrating the expectation which is mounting for the fourth and biggest edition of ISE.

The event promises a range of new features, displays and innovations, and includes strong backing from the three industry associations CEDIA, InfoComm International and NSCA. The Netherlands - 3M will launch its Vikuiti Rear Projection Film at Integrated Systems Europe 2007 (Stand O 50). The flexible, easy to apply film enables video, static images and dynamic messaging to be projected directly onto windows and glass surfaces or partitions, becoming the centre of attraction in any high street or shopping mall. A range of digital wall displays and interactive whiteboards will also be on show with the brand new Digital Media System 700 and 800 Series, featuring Vikuiti Super Close Projection from 3M.

The Vikuiti display enhancement film is 3M's latest rear projection innovation designed to transform any glass surface into a dynamic branding and promotions tool. Qatar - In early December as Doha, Qatar hosted the 15th annual Asian Games with an Opening and Closing ceremony befitting the world's top international sporting events. In a celebration of Qatar, the city of Doha and Arabic culture, Khalifa Stadium was transformed into a spectacle of colour and costume that placed Doha firmly on the sporting world's map. The ceremonies were produced by David Atkins Enterprises for DAGOC (Doha Asian Games Organising Committee).

Although the Qatari capital uncharacteristically suffered the most rain locals could remember in years, including a downpour just 45 minutes before the Opening, it neither dampened the spirit of the Games nor affected the nearly 400 MAC 2000 Washes used on the production.

Distributed through Martin's Australian representative, Show Technology, the MAC 2000 Wash fixtures along with Atomic 3000 strobes and Stage Cyclos w

USA - Once again Total Structures will be helping one the largest motor manufacturer's promote their products at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) being held in Detroit in January. Hot on the heels of last year's massive Ford corporate structure (a total of 1.5 Miles of truss was supplied) the company has just finished the production of additional equipment for both the Ford and General Motors booths.

For NAIAS 2007 the Ford Motor Company made some changes to the previous year's enormous 110,000sq.ft. ceiling structure, with the entire ceiling moving 15ft. upstage to allow lighting troughs to be repositioned over the new floor layout.

One of the cross stage trusses now fell under an air-wall and the top of the truss at trim sat above the low position of the air-wall track. Total Structures had to make a 240ft. dummy truss 2" thick (essentially a ladder ly

With a funky minimalist design, an innovative LED mood lighting scheme and a broad mix of good music, it's immediately started becoming a destination for discerning clubbers from in and around the area.

Independent owners Stuart Hayles and Ian Fell, who also own The Castle pub in the town, spotted a gap in the market that they thought they could fill with their brand new 300 capacity venue concept, sited on first floor a former bank.

They wanted to combine high production values with a friendly and chilled vibe, and were also keen to utilise other local businesses and skills, so asked i-Vision's Luke Dodd to design, specify and supply environmental lighting. He had previously produced a small mood lighting scheme for the pub, which had made a real difference to the atmosp
