USA - A new sound reinforcement system recently implemented at the Stadium Theatre in downtown Woonsocket, Rhode Island is headed by a Mackie Onyx 4880 house mixing console.

The historic theatre, built in 1926 and eventually falling into disrepair, re-opened in 2001 as a performing arts centre following years of renovation work by the all-volunteer Stadium Theatre Foundation. Since re-opening, however, sound quality within the theatre's Grand Hall was not up to expectations, leading the foundation to seek a professional solution.

The shoebox-shaped Grand Hall offers approximately 1,100 seats split between the main floor, balcony and side boxes. Its ample stage now hosts more than 90 events a year, including concerts, theatrical productions and lectures.

UK - A new £7m boutique hotel development in Edinburgh's fashionable West End has been equipped from the ground up with audio products from the Fuzion plc catalogue.

The Hudson Hotel, the latest addition to the 21-strong Festival Inns portfolio, is the result of merging a former post office, night club and office block into a complete leisure operation, including 31 technology-led bedrooms, The Hudson Bar and Hudson Club. To fulfil the brief of providing cutting-edge technology the company turned to Edinburgh-based Dynamic Productions.

Dynamic's project manager Graeme Anderson has brought all his expertise to bear over the three hotel room floors, ground floor bar/reception and basement nightclub, where he has worked magnificently to convert a space with restricted ceiling height into a vibrant, atmospheric dance venue.

USA - In the past several months, Minneapolis has added two state-of-the-art dance clubs with incredible sound systems powered by amplifiers: the MC2 Audio E25 and E45 power amps. The sound systems for both the new Karma and Visage clubs were designed and installed by Minneapolis-based Light N Trax, and the MC2 amplifier sale was made by John Bormann of Bormann Marketing.

Karma enjoyed a warm reception to its opening in the heart of Minneapolis's club district. There, a sound system based on the EAW Avalon speaker system is propelled by 55,000 Watts from a combination of MC2 E25 and E45 amplifiers powering the mains, subs and fills. The two-story club features a separate VIP suite and several private cabana areas.

UK - At the start of the new millennium universities were starting to realise that in order to compete with the town centre nightclubs they had to radically improve their own campus facilities. The Union at Leeds University was quick out of the blocks, establishing the then quite radical Stylus nightclub, with technology company Green-I providing a powerful Martin Audio Blackline dance surround system.

Meanwhile, the adjacent Harvey Milk Bar (named after San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor) was slowly falling into dilapidation, and closed entirely back in 2001.

Five years on, the derelict building has reopened as the 450-capacity Mine, offering an all-day restaurant within a brand new infrastructure, which has seen the old staircase removed and replaced with a DJ booth - thanks to interior designers Studio BAAD and Green-I.

Iceland - QSC signal transport system has been specified in the regenerated multi-room Eldborg Conference Centre, on the site of a famous geothermal spa in Iceland.

Situated just outside Reykjavik, The Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland's most popular choices for international visitors, is in the midst of a major redesign and expansion programme, set to complete by the spring of 2007. This will include the bathing, shower and lagoon facilities, but also a greater choice of restaurants - including a 250-cover diner built into a lava cliff - and the sophisticated Conference Centre. With three separate rooms and an entrance hall, it can accommodate up to 400 people (220 theatre style) in the largest of its reconfigurable facilities.

The new system is part of a turnkey AV upgrade of an existing system in which the ceiling speakers, amplifiers and video projectors have been retained.

UK - Salisbury-based Stagecraft Theatre Services (STS) is celebrating the completion of new sound installations worth in excess of £120,000 at two schools and a live events venue. STS, which is a leading staging, lighting and sound company has been responsible for the complete design and installation of the new systems, which include new QSC modular loudspeakers and Yamaha digital mixing desks.

"It has been exceptionally busy for the sound department this year and so far we have completed over 30 installations," explains Stagecraft's Martin Palmer. "Each project has varied dramatically, from the installation of simple microphone and speaker systems in a school hall, to complex mixing desks and modular loudspeakers at a live events venue."

Macau - RCF's distributor in China, Eastern Acoustic Development Ltd has recently supplied a complete sound system for the Fashion Bar in the newly developed Macau Fisherman's Wharf. As the first-ever themed entertainment attraction in Macau's tourism industry, Fisherman's Wharf is centrally located at the outer harbour, near to the Macau Ferry Terminal and Heliport. It combines entertainment, retail, food, hotel, marina, convention and exhibition facilities, all in one place.

Greece - Outline has announced a Butterfly 'outlinearray' installation at Athens' MOV, one of the Greek capital's most famous bouzouki bars. Recently inaugurated, the MOV hosts top Greek singers and artists (such as Stelios Rokkos and Zafiris Melas), who entertain the venue's select clientele with live performances.

A total of eight Outline CDH 483 Hi-Packs and four CDL 1815 Low-Packs (the firm's low frequency enclosures with cardioid characteristics) were flown and aimed with the aid of Outline VIP software, in order to ensure even coverage right from the front seats, eliminating the need for any additional front-fill systems, say the company.

UK - Back in June 2004, ETC unveiled its new $21m corporate headquarters in Middleton, Wisconsin, complete with an elaborately-themed common area for staff. Designed by the company's engaging CEO, Fred Foster, along with a talented team of architects and artists, this themed set-piece was described as being "like an old-time movie set waiting for its gangster extras, or a Broadway musical stage before the dancers appear".

Foster saw the theatrical concept as an homage to the business his company operates in. USA - dbx Professional Products, a Salt Lake City-based manufacturer of professional signal processing products and a division of Harman International, has announced that five of its premium DriveRack 4800 loudspeaker management processors have been selected to control a JBL sound system in one of London's premier cinemas.

The Empire Cinema in Leicester Square, which hosts many of the UK's film premiers, has undergone a much needed equipment upgrade following its takeover from UCI by the newly-formed Empire Cinemas Ltd. According to The Empire's marketing and development manager, Kevin Anderson, the investment has run "well into six figures".

USA - The recently renovated and expanded worship sanctuary at Blackshear Baptist Church, located in Flowery Branch, Georgia, includes a new sound reinforcement system headed by Danley Sound Labs SH-50 and SH-100 full-range loudspeakers, along with the company's TH-112 subwoofers.

Blackshear Baptist is one of the fastest growing churches in the Atlanta area, with the expansion of the sanctuary from 1,000 seats to more than 1,700 reflecting this growth. The sanctuary now offers theatre-style raked seating and a huge balcony wrapping around three sides of the room. Members enjoy worship services that include spoken word, a large traditional choir, and more contemporary music provided by a rhythm section and brass/reed section.

USA - Aviom has been selected to enhance the sound system at 30,000-member Lakewood Church in Houston, the largest church in the US. Lakewood Church televises its broadcasts, reaching over 200 million households. Audio Analysts, the audio technology company for Lakewood, installed several AN-16i Input Modules and AN-16o Output Modules in addition to multiple Pro16 Personal Mixers for the worship team.

"Aviom's bandwidth is excellent," says Joe Caruso, senior audio engineer for Audio Analysts. "It's easy to use and guarantees an accurate performance. We tested it against other snakes and listened to the bandwidth for any concern in regards to audio degradation and there is none."

UK - Stage Technologies have supplied the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre with a portable automation control system. The new 1,000 seat theatre is a temporary venue for the RSC while major renovation works transform their permanent home at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The temporary venue has been designed as a prototype for the auditorium planned in the permanent theatre which will re-open in 2010. The new thrust-stage brings the audience closer to the actors to re-create the intimacy of the theatres known in Shakespeare's time.

The entire Courtyard Theatre project is estimated to have cost in the region of £6m and following careful planning it is envisaged that a large amount of the equipment and materials will subsequently be reused in other RSC theatres and to support its works in London and on tours in the UK and around the world.

UK - It would appear that business has developed a distinctly oriental flavour for AV installation specialists, Sound Division. Hard on the heels of the installation in the exclusive Just Oriental in London's Picadilly comes a comprehensive AV installation into a brand new bar called the V-Bar which belongs to the adjoining Mandarin Palace Chinese restaurant in Hornchurch in Essex. In this instance the client required a full PA set-up, lighting and plasma screen in addition to a background music system.

Sound Division's David Graham explained that the V-Bar is a new piano bar that is attached to the main restaurant. "It's a very picturesque setting so they wanted to make the most of it with a proper professional set-up." Germany - Traditionally utilities are housed in functional buildings, often outside of town, away from the scrutinous eye of urban dwellers, but not always. Centrally located in the city of Leipzig is the gas and steam cogeneration plant, GuD Heizkraftwerk. Owners Leipziger Stadtwerke GmbH sought to integrate the building with the more aesthetic structures of Leipzig's architectural centre and thereby positively influence the city's night time image. Commercially, the company wanted to visually brand the cogeneration plant with the yellow and blue logo of Stadtwerke Leipzig. In November 2003 the company presented IPRO Leipzig with a draft and implementation plan that called for a unique night time lighting concept that could achieve these goals.

USA - Sennheiser has sponsored the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, which celebrates the essential contributions made by generations of talented musicians in all genres of music. The company has outfitted the complex with a broad selection of Neumann and Sennheiser microphones for the performance space.

The Museum is the brainchild of Nashville songwriter Joe Chambers, who also owns a chain of guitar stores in the area. Hungary - Audiovisual systems specialist, Interton, has completed a project in the Hungarian city of Debrecen. The new Kölcsey Congress Centre is the country's second largest facility of its kind and forms a multifunctional centre for Debrecen's unique cultural life.

The Kölcsey Centre includes three buildings, a Congress Centre, a Hotel and a Museum. The Congress Centre, in which Interton designed and installed all of the sound and video systems, contains a large auditorium with seating for 1,100 people, a ballroom, eight partitioned rooms and a multifunctional ballroom / exhibition space as well as a small AV studio and an impressive entrance foyer. UK - Projected Image Digital has supplied the first Element Labs' VersaPIXEL installation - featuring over 3000 point-sources of light - in the UK, at the newly opened Grosvenor Casino, on Bury New Road Manchester. The PID team worked closely with Cadmium Design's Paula Reason and Tina Chetnik, who specified the VersaPIXELs.

Reason is well known for designing light features into her innovative architectural and interior schemes, and recently incorporated other Element Labs products into high profile installations at the Hard Rock Café venues in London and Barcelona and for casinos in Leicester and London. Reason had wanted to use VersaPixels ever since she was inspired by watching a 'product in action' video of the massive O2 exhibition stand at CeBit.

USA - D.J. Willrich Ltd (DJW), the audio visual and multi-media specialists, has produced a virtual viewer for the new Jamestown Archaearium in Virginia. It provides a live view of the Fort site as it is today, however, it also presents the Fort as it would have been in 1607, in scale and in perspective superimposed on the live view to the point that visitors do a double take to make sure the Fort only exists in the virtual view.

DJW were invited by Haley Sharpe Design to help deliver their vision of virtual interpretation at the Archaearium, which is a 5000sqft interpretation centre on the archaeological discoveries at Jamestown Fort, the site of the first British Settlement in Virginia.
