UK - AV and integration specialists Metropolis have completed a sound, lighting and AV installation at the new-build independently owned Common Room in Sheffield, which features the first use of their new Met3 RGB Cove Strip LED product.

The venue's owners wanted to appeal to wide mix of students, young professionals and sports fans, and approached Metropolis on the strength of their other work in this field which includes the current Sports Café brand roll out.

For the first floor Common Room - in a converted Post Office warehouse building - they wanted to create a stimulating and lively environment throughout the bars and large pool playing area with the imaginative use of sound, lighting and AV. They also wanted colour changing LED lighting in the street side windows and below the pool tables.

The project was managed for Metropolis by Stuart Clowes. The client's sp

USA - After a recent remodel, Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC) in Sugar Land, Texas moved into a larger and more aesthetically pleasing space. Unfortunately, the room suffered from a twofold reverberation problem: too much of the wrong kind for one application, and not enough of the right kind for another.

The church's dual dilemmas stemmed from the spectral characteristics of the sanctuary's architectural acoustics. Any sound system that fully excited the room would produce high-frequency reverberation certain to impair voice intelligibility. At the same time, low-mid reverberation needed for depth and fullness in organ music and congregational singing would be seriously deficient. Further architectural changes to remedy the situation would have been prohibitively expensive, and likely detrimental to the visual aesthetics of the room, as well. Fortunately, consultant and a

"We chose the iDR because the programming of the box is very simple and the processor is very solid. We were able to install the system very quickly without any of the employees knowing," says Bounds. "We have also used the iDR in many other installations and we have found it to be a flexible and reliable solution."

The 315-seat Concert Hall, a chamber music venue, and a daily performance, tuition and rehearsal space for the school's use, is also available for hire for other music events and recording sessions.

Its construction was inspired by the death of the school's mentor Yehudi Menuhin in 1999, and was finally opened in January of this year. UK - Marquee Audio has recently supplied a KV2 Audio EX 10 active powered loudspeaker system to ITV's London Studios. Marquee's Rob Whitaker explains: "I was initially contacted by Luke Wallace at The London Studios who looks after their AV requirements. Initial discussions were based around a fixed installation but during further investigation, listening to how and what would be expected and taking into account the aesthetics of the room (clean lines, cool steel and lots of glass) it was decided that a highly flexible, but portable system which could be quickly set up and struck down would be the best solution, but without any of the sonic compromises that often occur when taking into account the client's requirements."

The room has to be used in several different ways including, green room, canteen and conference facility. Whitaker says: "The room is used in jus

USA - Tim Eldridge of dBA Acoustics, a respected consulting and design services firm, recently helped raise the roof of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum to allow for bigger audiences and better sound throughout. Initially a 10,000-seat indoor stadium, primarily used for events such as hockey games and various traveling shows, the venue's owner felt it was time to fully renovate and increase seating capacity by a third. This required the removal of the venue's roof. It was cut free and raised with cables while upper seating sections and suites were built underneath.

Today, the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is a 13,000-seat - and far more welcoming - live event destination. It even sounds better than before, thanks to Eldridge and his simple, yet capable acoustic measurement system featuring an Earthworks M30 microphone, SIA SmaartLive software, the TerraSonde Audio Too

It was all very straightforward and the service we received was excellent."

USA - The Red Raiders of Lubbock's Texas Tech University are one of the state's higher-profile college football teams: a big 12 team that swept the Holiday Bowl last year in San Diego, and played in the Cotton Bowl this year. The team's coach, Mike Leach, was recently the first coach to make the cover of the New York Times Magazine, achieving the distinction of being named one of football's best offensive coaches. Home for the team is Jones SBC Stadium, a 55,000-seat venue that underwent a $90 million renovation last year, including replacing the stadium's patchwork sound system with a new system built on Meyer Sound's Milo high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers.

The stadium's original design dates from the 1960s, and while it's not all that out of the ordinary, it presented a few logistical challenges that led James Bush, the venue's production manager, to opt for the single

UK - One of the most unlikely hybrid retail operations in London's burgeoning Fitzrovia area, is that of CVO Firevault. Immersed in the luxurious basement showroom of prestigious fireplaces and flickering flames is an ultra-chic cocktail bar and restaurant - the brainchild of husband and wife owners, Carolyn and Christian van Outersterp. Given the unique surroundings, after hours this transforms effortlessly into a seductive intimate party venue.

The only element letting the place down was the sound system, as manager Matthieu Destandau explained. "When I first came here three years ago it was more like a casual coffee bar, but slowly we increased the restaurant and bar activity, as well as the outside entertainment."

With the sponsoring of private parties and receptions in the 85 cover restaurant came the requirement for outside production, and Destandau called on C

USA - Making big improvements to a live venue's sound doesn't have to be complicated. When new ownership took over an existing 600-person club in New York named Revolution Hall, they expected it would take a lot of work to turn around its infamous negative sonic characteristics. Instead, all they had to do was install a new live sound system from Danley Sound Labs.

"My goal with Revolution Hall was to create an all-purpose venue where you could perform all genres of music with the highest quality sound," says John A. Chiara, owner. "Installing loudspeakers from Danley Sound Labs has been instrumental in achieving that. A drummer that played in this venue regularly over the years told me that it has gone from being the worst-sounding club he ever played to the best-sounding. Then he asked me what acoustic adjustments I'd made. I said, 'None yet, I just changed the

UK - Darren Beckley, business development manager for Stage Electrics London was impressed with the Selecon Arena PC when he saw one for the first time at a Selecon Workshop in Crawley recently. The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm in London is a historic steam engine repair building which was closed in 1983 and remained in a state of disrepair until 1998 when the Roundhouse Trust was set up to lead its redevelopment and restore this legendary venue, whose walls rocked to the sound of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd in the '60s and '70s, back into the arms of London's cultural scene.

UK - Slingco has installed a circular CableNet tension wire grid system - only the third circular one in the UK - at the Roundhouse in Camden. The venue is due to open next week after a 29.7 million refurbishment project setting it up as one of Europe's most dynamic performance spaces.

CableNet was initially specified by the project architects John McAslan and Partners as the safest and most flexible way of providing access to the high level technical space. This contains rigging, lighting and audio equipment above the stage and auditorium.

Slingco was initially consulted in 2002, and CableNet was an integral part of the rebuilding plans very early in the design process. They liaised with other civil and engineering contractors to co-ordinate the design, and ensure a smooth and efficient installation.
