UK - Architectural and feature lighting specialists i-Vision has supplied and installed a highly atmospheric lighting scheme at the Courtyard Hotel in Leixlip, just outside Dublin. The beguiling building right on the banks of the River Liffey was Ireland's first and original Guinness Brewery, back in 1756.

The 40 room Courtyard Hotel contains two top class restaurants and four bars, six conference suites and exterior seating for 1000 people. Attention has been paid to detail in the renovation of the old brewery which has seen the sympathetic addition of a brand new hotel wing. From the outset, they realised that lighting was an essential 'finishing' factor, and vital to the overall aesthetics and feel of the environment.

Australia - State Automation reports that it has increased its lighting and service focus in Europe, Asia and Middle East over the last few months, to complement its strong commitment to local Australian business. "We anticipate future overseas revenues to rise rapidly, as a result of contract negotiations under way," said new operations director, Patrick Bravard.

Australia - Queensland-based Audio Visual Devices has supplied an LSC maXim MP lighting console and two LSC iPAK 12 channel dimmers to Victoria Point High School. AVD's managing director David Duffy had originally allowed for another desk and dimmers until he checked out the LSC maXim. It was then that he realised just how ideal LSC consoles are for school environments.

"The maXim is easy to use and the PatPad, although integrated into the console, is a separate module which I like," said Duffy. "It's good the way you can use the maXim as a straight preset console or a scene-style console and advance from there. UK - The Training Initiative, the long-established training and education programme run by leading entertainment lighting supplier White Light, has announced a line-up of one-day classes for the first half of 2006 in addition to its normal round of training initiatives. The classes offer visitors the chance to learn about some of the latest lighting technology, ranging from MA Lighting's grandMA lighting console to CAD software such as AutoCAD and WYSIWYG.

Held at White Light's base in London, south-west London, classes are generally held on Wednesdays and run from 10am until 4pm. The season started on Tuesday January 24th with a free Advanced course on the grandMA console; this was complemented the next day with a Basic grandMA course.

UK - 5 Star Cases has supplied leading lighting and rigging rental company HSL from Blackburn with 100 new Tour Grade road cases to accommodate a variety of CM Lodestar motors.

HSL uses 5 Star exclusively to supply its flight cases. Rupert Reynolds, head of HSL rigging says: "The cases are extremely well built and 5 Star always turn them around quickly and efficiently - as they are frequently needed at short notice. They are also great at coming up with ideas of how to case the odder and more idiosyncratic pieces of kit!"

The Ancienne Belgique's main hall and three smaller spaces have played host down the years to artists from Jacques Brel to Lou Reed and Herbie Hancock to U2. The popular venue had a major £13m rebuild and refit in 1997 to reinforce its reputation as one of the best loved venues on the midsize European tour circuit. Thailand - The Ratchada Grand Theatre in Bangkok is one of the world's grandest stages. For its feature show, Siam Niramit, a theatrical spectacular of Thai art and cultural heritage, heavy fog was required for several scenes.

Held nightly in the luxurious 2,000 seat Ratchada Theatre, Siam Niramit stars 150 performers with over 100 stage crew and technicians on hand for support. It is in fact one of the largest stage productions in the world. With a stage area measuring 65m wide by 40m deep, the task of covering this immense space in fog posed a unique challenge.

Brazil - Tiësto (for three consecutive years voted the World's Best DJ by DJ Magazine) had his recent show at the 7,000 capacity Marina Santa Aldeia venue in Sao Paolo lit with Robe moving lights. It was part of a Brasilian tour by the Dutch born artist. Absolute Lighting supplied the equipment to the show, for a design by Welder Rogers, which was programmed and operated by Absolute's Paulinho.

Absolute is one of Brazil's leading rental companies, based in Sao Paulo, and supplying lighting, crew and expertise to a whole range of different lighting genres including concerts and touring shows, live venues, television productions and architectural projects. With one of the largest moving light inventories in the area, they were asked to provide both the moving and generic light specification for the Tiësto show.

UK - The PAI Group has designed and installed an eye-catching lighting scheme in the Roof top lounge at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli. The hotel is privately run by Gryphon Leisure. Its new rooftop conservatory lounge gives the grand old Edwardian building a contrasting and contemporary twist.

Gryphon initially approached PAI to provide an audio solution for the new space. However, as soon as Paul Adams set eyes on the plans, he immediately saw the potential for lighting. He suggested this to the client, who was also convinced, and gave Adams the green light to create a scheme.

"The place was just crying out to be lit, " explains Adams, "It was a simple idea to basically edge light the glass panels of the roof, but one that I knew would have massive impact." Adams conceived the lighting design with Geoff Jones from i-Vision, utilising a total of twenty

UK - The Hammersmith Palais maintains its status as London's flagship live venue as The Shockwaves NME Awards return for the fourth consecutive year.

2006 sees the ceremonies technical production growing further in ambition, combining complex requirements from TV and bands to live audience. The TV show, produced by Remedy, is recorded live, and after the show has been recorded, the team have just an hour and a half to turn raw footage into a fully-realised TV programme, ready to air.

Nine cameras inside the Palais feed directly into three generator powered broadcast trucks, provided by Fleetwood Mobiles. A stunning homage to 60's science fiction and B-Movies, constructed by GTMS Event Solutions, will transform The Palais' main stage, themed as 'attack of the monsters of rock' and featuring Ian Brown, the recipient of this year's 'God-like Genius' Award'.
