South Africa - Fan Base is a hi-energy new TV game show series being recorded in South Africa for SABC 1, where the public get to compete with a variety of celebrities by engaging in assorted games.

The show is being recorded in Q-Studios, Kew, Johannesburg and lighting includes a number of Robe moving lights which have been supplied by Centurion-based Blond Productions - one of SA's leading rental companies.

Blond's key lighting designer Peter Reick and director Christiaan Ballot created the show's production lighting design, which is operated and directed on site by Hein Stroh.

Fan Base replaces the very well established Jam Alley show, which ran for 18 years, so the pressure was on to create something equally as unique and special with a big emphasis on having the right production values on-board.

The look is based around a colourful set designed by Wayne Sproule from P

USA - To light indie pop band Foster the People, lighting designer Zach Matusow used his theatrical story telling background, his time spent under the watchful eye of Martha Stewart, his chops cut from lighting bands for Live Nation, and Chauvet Professional gear.

Nearly 40 pieces of Chauvet Professional fixtures accompanied the band on its recent tour, supporting its debut studio album Torches. The bulk of which, 16 Chauvet Professional COLORado Batten 144 Tour linear wash lights, lit the 60ft curved backdrop illustrated in the same vein as the album art. Or more accurately, helped tell the story of the tour.

"The backdrop was kind of the glue of the set and the world of our stage," said Matusow, who worked closely with set designer Trevor Stirlin Burk for this reinvigorated, reinterpreted last leg of Foster the People's 15-month tour. "After the band sk

USA - Thirty years on and Def Leppard is still one of the most important bands in rock music. Over 100m albums sold, a catalogue of rock anthems and a reputation for spectacular live shows attest to that.

The band has always had a loyal following in the US and has just wrapped up a Rock of Ages summer tour there with lighting design by Kenji Ohashi. Kenji's design used the Union Jack as its main theme and lit by a mostly Martin Professional lighting system supplied by Upstaging.

"It has been another great year of touring with Def Leppard," says Paul Costa of Upstaging, who have been supplying Def Leppard tours for years. "It was a pleasure to work with Kenji and the whole Def Leppard production."

For the summer 2012 tour Upstaging supplied 46 MAC Auras, 28 MAC III Profiles, 36 MAC 2000 Wash XBs, 8 MAC 2000 Beam XBs, 42 Stagebar 54s, and 30 Atomic 3

Germany - Aquanario, Europe's biggest mobile water show, celebrated its official premiere on 17 August in Berlin, Germany. For 10 nights, no less than 45.000 visitors saw an impressive show with water, lasers, fire, lights, pyrotechnics and music. Rock Solid Lighting created the lighting design and was responsible for programming and the lighting control system.

From 17 to 26 August, the Zentraler Festplatz of Berlin was transformed into a magical stage, featuring Europe's biggest water show. Flash Art Show Productions' director Markus Katterle and Rock Solid Lighting's lighting designer Jens Hillenkotter created an extraordinary 50-minute performance with 500.000 litres of water, lasers, fire, lights and pyrotechnics synchronously to the music.

From the very early stages of the show, Markus Katterle and Jens Hillenkotter decided to use the V:3D software of Syncronorm.

South Africa - With a reputation of putting on superb musicals for the past 35 years, the Ligbron Academy of Technology for high school students in Ermelo outdid themselves with the production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

For a sprinkle of magic, Ligbron called on the services of JSF Productions for the full technical production. All equipment was hired in from MGG Productions.

"The show was very theatrical, it is after all a Disney musical," commented Johan Ferreira of JSF Productions, technical director, designer and operator. "I did months of research and design to be able to recreate the Disney enchantment on an extremely tight budget."

Ligbron usually host their musicals in a charming and well equipped theatre in Ermelo. With the venue not being available for this year's production, it was held in the school hall instead. "The stage

Qatar - Part of the Qatar Foundation's Education City campus, Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and RHWL Architects of Berlin, is the largest in the Middle East. Located in the fast-developing city of Doha, its myriad of facilities - theatre, three auditoria, conference hall, 40,000m2 exhibition space, nine halls, and plethora of meeting rooms - are of the highest standard with a technical specification that is world class.

Although QNCC opened in December of 2011, Lee Prince, director of lighting design consultancy firm Light + Design Associates of London, has been involved with lighting the multi-use facility since 2004. He comments, "The brief was to create a dynamic, changing environment for the various activities that take place at QNCC such as conferences, conventions, music, lectures, banquet events, etc. We've done

China - The Chinese version of the American television singing competition, NBC's The Sing Off featuring a cappella groups, airs on Shenzhen Satellite Television and uses Martin Professional MAC III series luminaires for the dynamic visual accompaniment.

Singing a cappella, that is, without instrumental accompaniment, is very demanding and requires highly refined vocal intonation. Martin's flagship MAC III Profile and MAC III Performance luminaires were specially selected for their accurate colour mixing and delicate color tones as an ideal match for the strong sense of melody and rhythm of the a cappella style.

The MAC III series lights were also the main dynamic lighting instruments used on the US version of the show and to this end organizers invited the original stage designers and lighting designers to China for guidance.

Some 18 MAC III Performances play an impo

USA - Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures were crazy popular on the Carnival of Madness tour, the annual rock extravaganza that played major US cities this summer. Evanescence headlined dates across the country along with Chevelle, Halestorm, New Medicine and CAVO.

Dan Hardiman of THC Design, the lighting designer for Evanescence, selected 26 Sharpy fixtures for the exclusive use of the band. The core of the Evanescence rig was used for all of the musical acts.

"I had previously used Sharpys for Goo Goo Dolls and for Evanescence as floor specials," says Hardiman. "Sharpys are a very lightweight fixture whose beam is visible in daylight. For this tour I wanted to remove the ACLs from the flown rig to save on focusing time and eliminate the need to climb any trusses. Sharpy was the perfect choice: Its small footprint and high power-to-weight ratio enabled the units t

The new booth design by Nathan Wan from Robe UK featured a contemporary reception and lounge / chill area illuminated by the latest Anolis architectural LED products including the innovative ArcDot.

ArcDot displays were modelled into two stylish interactive coffee tables - which received several offers to purchase!

Finland - Choreographer Tero Saarinen's creation Vox Balaenae is set to the contemporary music piece of the same name - one of the best-known works by American composer George Crumb. The music was inspired by a recording of humpback whales singing in the depths of the ocean. The composition has three parts: a prologue and an epilogue, separated by five variations named after geological periods.

Theatrical elements are built into the play's staging instructions: the piano, cello, and flute are all electrically amplified and the musicians are meant to perform masked on a stage bathed in deep-blue light.

Lighting and set designer Mikki Kunttu relied on a grandMA2 light to control the show's lights and the media server.

He states: "This line of work requires both very fast and very detailed programming. There is really no other console on the market that can deliver

USA - Melissa Etheridge is once again on the road, this time promoting her newest album, 4th Street Feeling. The Academy Award and two-time Grammy Award winner kicked off her tour early October and will make her way through North America throughout the fall season.

While it has only been a few months since her last tour, the singer-songwriter is offering a different experience for her audience with a stripped, intimate tour that reflects the artful, organic feel of her 12th studio album.

Lighting designer David Hamilton worked with tour manager Steven Girmant to give the show the exposed, rehearsal vibe he and Etheridge sought to express. In his ninth year of working with Etheridge, Hamilton wanted to "turn the venues on their heads" and strip the stages of any and all ornament.

"You see ladders, truss, lighting instruments, PA cabinets, and whatever's

Storm Report - Hit Broadway shows The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark are among the New York productions which closed in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. All Broadway performances on Sunday and Monday night were scrapped. Several film events were cancelled too, including the New York premiere of Keira Knightley film Anna Karenina.

It is not known how long Broadway's lights will stay out. Broadway League executive director Charlotte St Martin added that "the safety and security of theatregoers and employees is everyone's primary concern." Meanwhile the music world has also been affected, with acts such as Mercury prize-winners The xx, Rita Ora and John Legend all cancelling US shows.

USA - GLP's groundbreaking impression Spot One is among several of the German lighting manufacturer's LED fixtures that are presently dominating high profile touring productions in the US. However, while the impression series has extended its popularity with the arrival of the new X4head it has been the new fully featured automated Spot which is being seen as the holy grail by others.

Jackson Browne's lighting director/production designer for four years, Steve Comer, is one who admits, "I had been looking for an LED hard edge light for a long time, and when the Spot One came along it was just the fixture I'd been waiting for."

This latest tour expanded organically from its origins as a solo acoustic tour to an ensemble, with more and more musician friends set to join him onstage. And this called for a more theatrically lit show where stage positions and musicians cou
