The events society is a student-run technical service with the aim of providing further extra curricular experience for students on live event and other technically-orientated courses at the university.

Germany - Automobile museums are not exactly a recent invention. In contrast to other commodities, the horseless carriage became a cult object and collector's item just a few years after its invention. The new Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart has a more comprehensive exhibition concept. Its ambition is to structure the fascination with Mercedes automobiles under various topics and to establish historical connections. In that context the entanglement of the group during the Nazi-era and World War II is not ignored and even their participation in forced labour is explicitly stated.

The highly polished automobiles from the first motor carriage to the record breaking racing cars and Unimog utility vehicles, remain literally in the spotlights and constitute the visual heart of this collection.

Greece - Designed from the ground up, the new Irida live music venue has opened in time for the summer season in Crete. Located in Peza, 15km outside Heraklion, the club is owned by the company, D. Chatziathanasiou S.A., who will host social and cultural events mixed with live music. The total cost of the project was around € 2,500,000.

The venue, which trades on an impressive 3500m, spread across three levels, boasts a remarkable sound and lighting fit-out, with equipment supplied by Bon Studio.

He chose Bon Studio because of our all-year-round operation, our excellent reputation and technical expertise, after sales support - and our ability to deliver top quality audio and lighting products, which are exclusively distributed in the Greek market."

USA - It's a long-standing challenge in pretty much every small and mid-sized club the world over - how to get the stage monitors loud enough for the band without blowing them up or creating a feedback howl that will chase the audience out the door.

For the Elbo Room, a popular local club in the city's Mission District, San Francisco Audio's Radley Hirsch came up with a novel approach, suspending three Community R.5HP loudspeakers above the stage to create a stage monitoring design that is as efficient as it is powerful. The R.5HP, a weather-resistant sound reinforcement loudspeaker typically used for music and voice applications in arenas, fairgrounds and other outdoor venues, proved to be an ideal solution on a number of levels.

"It's hard for smaller clubs to budget for stage monitors, and the R.5HP's made perfect sense as a more affordable option," Hirsch explain

UK - Sophisticated digital Public Address and Voice Alarm (PA/VA) technology from Bosch Security Systems has been selected by Advance Integrated Systems (AIS) for the new Drake Circus Shopping Centre in Plymouth scheduled to open in Autumn 2006.

Central to the installation is Bosch's proven Praesideo technology - the world's first fully digital public address and emergency sound system characterised by the flexibility in the system configuration, simplicity of installation and high-quality audio reproduction. Its high output power and ability to be configured for many different zones makes it ideal for a shopping centre environment, say Bosch.

As well as the PA/VA system, AIS has also chosen technology from Bosch Security Systems' CCTV range, including EnviroDome (for outdoor surveillance) and FlexiDome XT (impact resistant) dome cameras, both with innovative motion tracking c

Australia - Adelaide airport's new $260 million state-of-the-art terminal features no fewer than 98 Turbosound loudspeakers. The 75,000sq.m terminal will initially cater for more than five million passengers a year, but has been designed to cope with up to eight million users within 10 years. The terminal is equipped to handle up to 27 aircraft simultaneously, and process 3,000 passengers an hour during peak periods.

Turbosound Qlight TQ-230 was the principal loudspeaker chosen to deliver these services. The TQ-230 is a compact cabinet comprising dual 5" woofers and a 1" compression driver on a rotatable horn, with a wide dispersion pattern. All 98 loudspeakers in the Adelaide terminal were custom-fitted with a high quality 100V line toroidal transformers and powered by a combination of Australian Monitor and Lab.gruppen amplifiers.

USA - Madama Butterfly is one of the most-loved works in opera. In fact, it was the favourite of its composer, Giacomo Puccini, out of all of his operas. Clearly, Madama Butterfly is a work with broad appeal, which made it an obvious candidate for an outreach effort by the San Francisco Opera. "It's a very expensive proposition to stage an opera," explains the opera's master audio engineer, Max Christensen. "Ultimately if we don't get what we do out of the opera house and make it more accessible to a larger audience, we put live opera at risk."

Recognising this, new San Francisco Opera general manager David Gockley is championing free performances by the opera in the city's parks, and recently created "Opera Vision," a programme to simulcast live performances from the War Memorial Opera House. The performance is transmitted to an outdo

UK - London's T Bar now benefits from a new sound system, recently installed by Kelco. The Shoreditch venue had been renting in a Funktion One rig and were so impressed that they decided to buy one. Their enquiries soon led them to Kelco.

Special attention had to be paid to the audio design to achieve the required effect. Jason Bacon of Audio Projects, London undertook the design. Kelco was able to advise on the scheme to meet the client's exacting demands. The system needed to be zoned to feed the venue's four distinct areas, but still have the ability to offer the same music into any or all areas.

The main dance arena required a full on system so the obvious choice was Resolution 4 boxes coupled with F-218 subs. Resolution 1s were specified for the restaurant area and some seating areas, all driven by Full Fat Audio (FFA) amplifiers. This was the first major installation to

UK - What started as a PC control package for the XTA DP100 Delay Processor in 1996, has grown into an audio management system. "We had no idea just how far AudioCore would go," says XTA's Andrew Grayland. "10 years on, AudioCore is almost unrecognisable," he continues. "With hindsight, it was a fairly simple package, designed to access the three bands of parametric EQ in the DP100, via a remote computer. As we added features to the units, DP200 then DP202, we added in the requests from engineers and sound companies about what they wanted AudioCore to do. DP200 became DP226, which became DP448 and AudioCore just continued to evolve along with the units - every useful idea we were given became written into code and part of the program.

"10 years later, we have matrixing control, phase filtering, crossover slopes and control of the DP4 Series processi

France - BSS Audio features heavily in a new installation at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, which dominates the French riviera playground of Cannes. While the smaller Claude Debussy Theatre has a total of 1,000 seats on balcony and ground floor, a 16m x 7m projection screen and simultaneous translation facility, it is the 2,300-capacity Louis Lumiere grand auditorium, host venue of the annual Cannes Film Festival, that underwent a substantial audio refit in time for this year's event.

With a stage measuring 25m x 16m and six-language translation facility, a flexible solution was designed around upgradable Harman Pro components, with the venue now able to switch seamlessly between conventional theatre and 5.1 cinema mode thanks to the deployment of BSS Audio Soundweb digital signal processing. This is used in conjunction with JBL Professional loudspeakers (5674 and L46

USA - LED-fitted Colortube EQ offers users the unique possibility of mounting a 32-band, real-time sound frequency visualizer, ideal for any venue where a highly visible and dynamic display is wanted. Each tube can be addressed to respond to one of 32 frequencies, from bass to treble, very much in the pulsating manner of a graphic equalizer on your stereo.

Each tube houses 144 blue, red and green diodes, weighs under 4lbs and is 40-inch long and 3-inch wide. The system features 16 pre-set patterns, chases, colour flows with variation plus blackout. An optional controller, sold separately, allows users to select specific colours, making this ideal for retail, sports and corporate events where brand identification is vital.

The tubes are sold in packs of four. Using just four tubes and selecting the first four addresses would display the four lower frequencies in the band. If you

UK - A major sound and lighting refurbishment at Butlins holiday resort in Minehead has seen all their premium entertainment venues - the 7,000-capacity Skyline Pavilion, 2600-capacity Centre Stage Theatre and 1500-capacity REDS - all equipped with Martin Audio components.

Between them they host a wide variety of summer entertainment, from children's shows to visits by the Ministry of Sound, and so a versatile, but compact system was required.

Minehead was already operating a Martin Audio W8C system in their Centre Stage Theatre, and that persuaded chief sound engineer Steve Borthwick and technical manager, Dirk Peace, to ask for a further audition.

"We really liked the W8C system in our premium venue, and although we listened other people's kit we wanted to maintain the reliability and sound quality of the W8C." But when Martin's Brad Watson presented the W8LM Min

UK - An extensive and versatile range of compact designer install loudspeakers from Tannoy will be launched at this year's PLASA Show (Stand AA14) in September. The speaker cabinet design offers a variable trim option to satisfy a wide variety of architectural requirements whilst the innovative bracket ensures very easy installation.

Each model is based on proprietary point source driver technology - either Dual Concentric or ICT (Inductive Coupling Technology). The point source driver systems generate a spherical wave front unaffected by energy loss at the crossover frequency in either vertical or horizontal planes.

Catering for a wide range of installation requirements there are many options available based on active or passive, low impedance or 70V / 100V line systems with driver sizes from 5" to 8". All the models provide premium sonic quality for music or speech

UK - Meaning the 'great melody of life' or 'big song', Òran Mór is a cultural centre and meeting place in the heart of Glasgow's West End. Formerly Kelvinside Parish Church, the converted building opened in 2004 and now houses two bars, two restaurants, a nightclub and private event space that are now serviced by a Turbosound Aspect loudspeaker system.

When the venue was originally opened, the owners had an open mind as to the kind of events that would be staged. But it quickly became apparent that Òran Mór had a captive market, as the only venue in Glasgow that catered for live gigs of 550-600 audience capacity. In addition, being located in the heart of the city's student population, a combination of live music and club nights swiftly proved extremely popular.

So, in 2006, the venue's technical manager Duncan Taylor was tasked with sourcing an additional PA system which h

UK - Blitz, one of the UK's leading technical staging specialists, supplied audio-visual and sound equipment for the première of United International Pictures' new film Miami Vice, in London's Leicester Square earlier this week. The film which officially opened over the weekend went straight to number one in the UK Box Office charts. Blitz, which works on over sixty percent of the prestigious movie premières that come to Leicester Square, used its comprehensive experience and knowledge of audio-visual techniques to great effect, contributing to an incredibly successful preview of the film.

Blitz was responsible for setting up two large R8 and R12 projectors inside the theatre and the construction of a frame to hold the 5m x 3m LED screen outside, above the Blue Carpet walkway. By using a live relay from the camera crews outside the event, Blitz allowed those inside the

USA - Digidesign employees are deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of one of their longest-serving and most valued team members, sales and marketing executive Christopher Bock.

Christopher Bock, or CB as many knew him, had a long tenure with Digidesign, playing a vital role in the company's early success. As long-time vice-president of sales and marketing, CB had recently been transitioning into a new role to focus on building strategic new business areas, the first of which was helping to expand Digidesign's growth in the live sound market.

"It's very difficult for us to accept that CB is no longer with us," said Dave Lebolt, Digidesign general manager. "He was a part of Digidesign from the very beginning. He was a charismatic leader and an excellent strategist, to say nothing of his musical skills as a percussionist. It's hard to convey how strongly this af

Canada - Fifteen years after investing in its first Soundcraft audio mixing console, Axion Sonorisation éclairage Audiovisuel (Axion SéA) in Quebec has become the first sound rental company in north America to commit to the company's large-format digital desk, the Soundcraft Vi6.

François Corbin of Axion is convinced that "the Vi6 ushers in a new era", and that its arrival will mean that other developers of digital mixing products are going to have to raise their game. "We have had this console for just a few weeks, and we are ready to purchase a second one right away," he says.

Shortly after taking delivery, Martin Chouinard, Axion's rental manager, sent the new desk to Le Festival d'été de Québec, a 10-day international outdoor event held in Quebec City. More than a million people come for the festival, and up to 10,000
