UK - Lighting Technology Projects (LTP) has installed and programmed a new piece of interactive light art, composed from 10,000 nodes of ColorKinetics' iColor Flex SL LED-based strand, custom-produced for the project, complete with transparent channels.

Artist Tim Knowles was commissioned to create several contemporary artworks in the regenerated Harbourside area by developers Crest Nicholson PLC, of which "Field of Play" is the largest.

Measuring an impressive 48 metres wide by 12 metres tall, it's constituted from 288 vertical lines of Flex, staggered - as per the original design concept - at between 50 and 700 mm widths, with varying drops. It runs along the sides of two buildings in the at the ever-evolving Bristol Harbourside development.

UK - The ABTT Theatre Show's organisers - The Association of British Theatre Technicians - have announced that its 29th edition has sold out five months before it takes place on 13 and 14 June in London's Royal Horticultural Halls.

Filling all three exhibition halls in London's Royal Horticultural Halls to capacity, the show will again play host to over 100 exhibiting companies who will showcase a comprehensive range of products and services for professionals involved with equipping, refurbishing or up-grading their drama studio, theatre, auditorium or multi-purpose performance space.

UK - When the plush new Bar Plazma in Wickford burnt down in October 2005 shortly after opening, it was hard to believe that it would re-emerge a little over a year later with an up-rated specification.

But the town centre venue, owned by experienced nightclub operator Douglas Quirk and managed by Alistair Burrell (who had safely evacuated all the staff and customers on that fateful October evening), has done precisely that.

Quirk, who made his name running the epochal Hollywood Romford in the 1980s, turned to fellow Essex contractors, Southend-based Essex Sound & Light and interior designer Colin Stone of Stone Me Design, to deliver a superior interior package. What they have produced is an upscale, all-day chameleon venue which trades from 11am until 11pm (midweek), 1am Thursday and 2am at weekends.

UK - Vision Fire & Security has announced that The O2 Arena has selected Millbank solutions to provide voice alarm and public address systems for the new music venue. The O2 is being re-developed by Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) to transform the Millennium Dome into "Europe's finest music venue". The 23,000 capacity in-door arena aims to host up to 150 music, entertainment and sports events in its first year.

The building will be renamed The O2 will also have a smaller Music Club venue with a capacity of 2,200, a multiplex cinema, an ice rink, a world-class exhibition space and a vibrant 'entertainment district' featuring a variety of bars, restaurants, retail and leisure facilities.

Building on Vision Fire & Security's global partnership with Tyco, the Millbank team began working together with ADT to realise the challenging brief from the early stages.

USA - Philadelphia Park Casino and Racetrack in Bensalem, Pennsylvania is an established horse track - home of the prestigious Pennsylvania Derby - that houses a more recent casino addition. A somewhat drab exterior facade fuelled owners' desire to enhance the venue's Porte Cochere entrance and thereby draw attention to Philadelphia Park as a newly diversified, dynamic entertainment facility.

Korea - Cadac Electronics plc, working in partnership with local distributor Dreamsound Co Ltd, reports a series of installations in Korea. Four international musicals are currently being staged, with J-Type Live Production Consoles at the core of each show's sound system. The extensive new system comprises seven Allen & Heath iDR-8 digital processing mixers, an iDR-switch, iDR-Out, and from the accompanying range of PL remote control units, six PL-10 rotary fader panels, four PL-9 connection hubs, and 40 PL-4 wall plates.

Horse racing is the most popular spectator sport in Hong Kong, and the Club is the only authorized operator of horse racing. Czech Republic - The newly opened City Club in Roznov pod Radhostem, Czech Republic, is fully fitted out with a complete Robe Show Lighting moving light rig and is already creating a buzz in the area.

The 900 capacity venue is something totally new in Roznov. It's part of the main City Casino complex and features an industrial-chic interior design, stripped back, full of metal and brick surfaces and a dynamic music policy.

Coincidentally, Roznov is also the home town of Robe Show Lighting. Despite the close proximity of the factory, this is the very first installation of Robe lighting products in the locality.

Russia - ChainMaster, the German manufacturer of chain hoists and chain-hoist controllers for stage and show use, has designed a VarioLift chain-hoist system for the Chekhov Theatre in Moscow capable of being used either as a mobile system or a fixed installation.

It is built around twelve of ChainMaster's new 250 kg VarioLifts, which are capable of speeds up to 35 metres per minute. For the project, ChainMaster is working in concert with the Rock Stage Agency, its local distribution partner.

The VarioLift from ChainMaster came onto the market in 1998 after an 18-month development and test phase. It offers maximum precision and reproducibility in the positioning of chain hoists, the company reports. The lift is based on an integrated, vector-controlled frequency converter, supplied by a high-impulse incremental encoder and operates with a positional accuracy of 0.2 millimetres

UK - Havering College in Hornchurch, Essex, has undergone more than a year of extensive refurbishment, with up to date technology being supplied and installed in its drama studio, music studio, dance studio, TV studio, photographic darkroom and cinema. Trafalgar Lighting have supplied, stage lighting, control equipment and curtains to the college.

The latest and most innovative part of the refurbishment process is the Havering Cube, a multipurpose performance and exhibition space. UK - When specifying a new public address system, Southend United turned to locally-based Essex Sound & Light to for its 12,500 all-seater Roots Hall stadium. Although the football club is nicknamed 'The Blues', the 22 Turbosound TCS Compact speakers, supplied and installed, were all in black.

Although during the next 18 months the Coca-Cola Championship team look set to vacate the ground which has been home for the past 50 years, the upgrade nevertheless became essential, according to ESL's Mike Glover.

Denmark - Dansk Supermarked A/S chose local firm Aarhus Arkitekterne to design an expansion and modernisation of one of their premiere retail properties, Storcenter Nord shopping mall in Aarhus, Denmark. The project consisted of a large expansion of the retail area together with a new plaza and main entrance atrium meant to jettison the company's slightly outmoded image.

Besides re-imaging the centre in the minds of customers, there was also a need to do something more dramatic in order to draw customers to the area which essentially lies outside the city centre. "Storcenter Nord is a key part of a larger residential and business area that is experiencing dramatic growth," comments Architect Mogens Kristensen of Aarhus Arkitekterne. "The expansion gives the centre a new identity and the possibility to re-evaluate its relationship to its surroundings."

USA - Aviom Inc a leader in personal monitor mixing technology, has enabled Houston-based church Fellowship of the Woodlands to improve its efficiency and sound quality through the installation of Aviom's personal monitor mixing system.

Harold Rubens, the church's director of audio, says that the Aviom equipment has helped reinforce the church's sound integrity and ability in delivering a true worship experience for its 14,000 parishioners.

"Converting 16 channels of audio and transmitting them through a Cat-5 cable directly to the band produces a much clearer and defined sound for the musicians, who can then adjust their mixes as they see fit," Rubens explained. UK - Northern Light recently played a big part in the £360,000 improvements at Buxton Opera House. During the theatre's six week dark period - which ended on 16 February 2007 - Northern Light was responsible for managing an overhaul of the dimmer system and performance lighting circuits.

The Derbyshire venue is one of Britain's leading receiving theatres, presenting around 350 performances every year. Originally opened in 1903, Buxton Opera House was lovingly restored to its former glory in 2001 and this most recent improvement to the 938 seat theatre will ensure that the latest technology helps make each performance one to remember.

Northern Light's scope of work focused mainly in the backstage area and included the installation of a brand new ETC Sensor dimmer system - incorporating a total of 192 ways of dimming - and rewiring of all the performance lighting circuits.

UK - Bosch's sophisticated Praesideo public address system has been selected by SDD Sound and Light for use in an extensive project for the three campuses of ACS International Schools in Greater London. With a combined area of over 300 acres, the three campuses in Cobham, Hillingdon and Egham enrol a total of 2,400 students offering both day and boarding education. With more than 10,000 blooming flowers and a wide variety of other plant life, plus fountains and themed displays, the conservatory is located in a large atrium with a glass ceiling. The conservatory installs new displays five times a year: spring, summer, autumn, Christmas, and Chinese New Year. The displays feature plantings appropriate to the theme (including sculptures of people and animals made entirely out of flowers), along with scenic elements, active props, and other related items.
