UK - PEL Music & Media has been awarded the contract to design, install and commission new sound systems into McDonald's' biggest UK franchisee's restaurants.

Franchisee Pru Naik has 24 McDonald's restaurants, mainly around West London and Berkshire. His McDonald's feature stylish dark bamboo and cream colour schemes, flowers on the tables, free wi-fi in every restaurant and now a new sound system.

Brand & communications manager Rico Pieri investigated the sound options and found Bose to be both quick to respond and helpful. Bose put Pieri in touch with one of its leading Bose Pro-Partners, PEL Music & Media, for the system design and installation.

USA - The Healing Place Church, listed as one of "America's Most Innovative Churches" (Outreach magazine, Jan/Feb 2008), is a multi-purpose facility that includes a live worship space as well as a complete suite of production spaces for video and audio recording and broadcast. Through the use of extensive technical infrastructure, the production spaces can serve worship in the main sanctuary, or be configured to operate completely independently.

The Sanctuary's main sound system will consist of three arrays of 14 Outline Butterfly C.D.H. 483 elements each, powered by Outline T7 amplifiers. UK - The CSS installation team has had a busy winter, completing lighting and sound installation at Newent Community School, St Edwards School, University of Gloucestershire's University Chapel and Barnwood Park Arts College.

Newent School wanted to upgrade the dimmer capability to 24 channel, and digital patching unit. A new 63Amp 3-phase mains and a Strand Wall rack 24 to distribute to seven lighting bars, along with four Robe 250AT moving heads was provided.

An extensive sound, lighting and video installation at St Edward's Senior School in Cheltenham. covers two interconnecting drama studios both of which can operate independently, or in conjunction with each other. UK - Nestling against the dramatic backdrop of the Cornish coast, almost at Britain's most southerly point, lies the Minack Theatre - a gloriously visual outdoor performance venue. Northern Light has recently completed the upgrade of the venue's house lighting, which included cabling infrastructure, fixture renewal and DMX distribution.

Chris Watts, who had overall responsibility for project management on behalf of Northern Light, said: "It truly has been a joy to work on such an exceptional venue. An open air theatre presents its own unique challenges, particularly in terms of Mother Nature. The bulk of the installation took place in January during extremely inclement weather, but we stood up to the wind and rain and finished the job on time and on budget. The only other real issue was the distraction provided by the beautiful scenery."

China - Lying at the Western end of China's Great Wall, Jia Yu Guan has been a strategic transport nexus since the days of the Silk Road. This historic city, placed at one of the major crossroads of civilisation has added a grand new theatre to its already bustling streets.

It's a measure of the astonishing speed with which complex projects can be completed that the Jia Yu Guan Grand Theatre opened just sixteen months after builders first cut turf. An ambitious project by any measure, the fact that this prestigious arts venue was completed during the final year of China's massive construction project for the 2008 Olympics makes it all the more laudable. Jiuquan Iron & Steel (Group) Co, Ltd chose to install a d&b audiotechnik PA system in the venue.

Australia - The Capitol Theatre Tamworth, New South Wales, is a 402-seat purpose-built proscenium arch theatre, located in the new Centrepoint Shopping Complex in the town. The Theatre shares its foyer and bar facilities with Forum6 cinemas.

Theatre consultant Richard Stuart was engaged to plan and oversee the fit-out of the theatre. He explains: "Originally the theatre was going to be a large cinema but halfway through construction they developed the idea of making the largest cinema a live theatre. Consequently the building design was put on hold for a while whilst the theatre design evolved. As the developer started to think about theatre equipment and machinery, I was brought in as Theatre Consultant for the project although the building structure was well and truly locked in design-wise."

UK - The £15.3m regeneration of The Crucible Theatre passed a milestone recently as the completion of Phase 1 of the project was marked by a series of preview test events from 21 March to 4 April. Theatre consultants Theatreplan LLP have been providing specialist planning and technical design expertise throughout the project.

Phase 1 of the comprehensive refurbishment programme included a new roof, new exterior cladding, additional reinforcement for the building's foundations and redevelopment of the front of house areas. Theatreplan's team of Clive Odom, John Whitaker, Peter Ruthven Hall, Charles Wass and Mathew Smethurst-Evans were tasked with bringing the auditorium in line with modern disability access standards, and to replace the flying, lighting and sound systems. UK - When the new Westfield London shopping centre opened in west London last October, it became the largest inner city shopping destination in Europe - and an immediate hit with shoppers, who thronged to the venue to visit retailers ranging from Marks & Spencer and Debenhams to Apple, Louis Vuiton, Dior, Prada and Tiffany.

The retail outlets are gathered in malls and a village area around a central atrium the size of a football pitch with a spectacular undulating glass roof. Croatia - Adris Group, one of the leading companies in Croatia's tourist and travel sector, chose a Klotz Digital Varizone PA system for its new five star hotel Monte Mulini in Rovinj/Istria. Varizone has been installed by Dicroic, Klotz's Croatian sales and service partner.

UK - Landmark London venue The Scala, has upgraded its front-of-house console, replacing its old mixing desk with a new 32-channel Soundcraft MH3 analogue, multi-mode console.

The board was specified by the venue's experienced head of sound, George Gregori, on recommendation from Soundcraft dealer, Pete Brotzman of Crystal Pro Audio, who provided the venue with much of its audio support.

The desk is also used by day to run live sound training courses run by Gregori for his company Live Sound Courses. With many alumni having progressed to great achievements in the professional world of live sound mixing, he believes that the physicality of the analogue surface is much more forgiving than the digital equivalents.

"The MH3 is perfect for our needs - unlike our previous desk which was being repaired so often that it became uneconomical to maintain," observes Gregori.

Macau - Having renovated the small auditorium at the Macao Cultural Centre in 2006 with an ARCS system, L-Acoustics' Chinese distributor, Rightway Audio has now installed a new Kudo Line Source System into the venue's Grand Auditorium. One of the first theatre systems to be installed in South East Asia, it will primarily be used for classical and orchestral concerts and was supplied by Rightway to systems integrator, J K Brothers Audio Engineering Co.

The Grand Auditorium, a two-storey space with a capacity of 1,114, has been installed with 18 Kudo cabinets configured in three equal hangs at left, centre and right positions. Indonesia - The Music Républicain Performance Hall is a part of Music Républicain, the new school for music and image founded by Ivonne Atmojo and Ivana Atmojo in August 2008. Located in South Jakarta, Indonesia, the Music Républicain Performance Hall is a multi-purpose facility, which can be used for different settings including small ensemble, orchestra, theatre, opera, Broadway show and music concert. The Performance Hall was completed at the end of 2008 and is now open for public events. With an area of 126sq.m, it has a seating capacity of 140.

Ivonne Atmojo, the owner, said that there are not many performance halls in Indonesia that have good acoustics. UK - The Curve Theatre in Leicester's visuals may have grabbed the media headlines, but the venue's audio virtues are just as impressive. These include eight Yamaha mixing consoles and two digital mix engines. A vast amount of planning went into every facet of the venue, with Capital Project Director Graham Lister bringing together a wide variety of specialists in an 'end user consultation team' to ensure that every department offered the optimum end product for the theatre's most important users - the ticket-buying public.

UAE - When the Commercial Bank of Qatar recently completed the construction of its new headquarters, it wanted to give visitors a memorable and eye-catching welcome to the new facility and Lighthouse Technologies' LED screens provided the answer.

Installed by well-established audio-visual integrator Technomight, based in Dubai and Doha, UAE, the installation of an 8 x 6 panel (5.12m(w) x 2.88 m (h)) Lighthouse P6-FA screen in the building's lobby, provides an instant impression of the bank's high quality standards.

Switzerland - The Kantonsschule Wetzikon, a state college for higher education, has recently seen an extensive AV refurbishment in its Auditorium, and the installation of a high-specification audio system comprised of Nexo and Yamaha components.

The Auditorium is a multi-purpose venue, hosting meetings and presentations, theatrical productions and orchestral concerts, so the demands placed on the new sound reinforcement system were heavy. In addition, the theatre is protected under historic building regulations, so the installation of equipment had to be visually appealing.

Zap Audio proposed an all-purpose system centred on Nexo's new compact Geo S1230 two-way enclosures. Two of these modules have been flown either side of the stage, supplemented by a Nexo RS15 subwoofer and two Nexo PS8 cabinets as rear FX speakers. Egypt - The Cairo Opera House houses seven different stages and forms an umbrella organisation beneath which the city's music and dance companies, art galleries, museums, and training programmes can flourish. In addition to the high-calibre indoor events that have helped make the venue internationally famous, the organisers are now set to offer a programme of outdoor events, for which purpose they have invested heavily in systems from Electro-Voice from Egyptian partner Alpha Audio.

The core of the new system comprises an Electro-Voice XLC rig, which includes eighteen XLC127DVX loudspeakers and eight XLC215 subwoofers. These are complemented by eight PX1122M, four QRx153/75 enclosures, and two QRx218S subwoofers. UK - Audica Professional MICROline loudspeakers have made their theatre sound debut on Never Forget, the hit musical with the songs of Take That.

This musical has already enjoyed a highly successful West End run, drawing audiences totalling over a quarter of a million. On 3 April it started a full UK tour. Opening at The Manchester Opera House the show will take in 21 venues nationwide and close at The Liverpool Empire Theatre in December 2009.

The tour is being engineered by Marcus Wadham (Lazy Town, Dancing in the Streets), who will be working with the system designed by independent sound designer Richard Brooker and supplied by theatre hire company, Blitz Communications.

UK - National Geographic's flagship store in London's Regents Street is more than just a traditional retail experience. Interactive zones across the store's three floors represent each continent of the world - and Ecler amplification, distributed in the UK by MilTec, was central to the realisation of the final soundscape.

The world zones are themed retail areas that work separately from each other at certain times, hosting continent-specific events.

A total of 17 Ecler MPA6-150R multi-channel amplifiers, specified and installed by Peter Knowles, are zoned to enable each retail area to emanate its signature sounds. For special events, or to create extra interest in an area, a sales assistant has the ability to alter the levels of the amplifiers in their zone, from either a cash desk area or point-of-sale.

Qatar - ES Group has created the "world's largest large spanned temporary dome" to host royal families and high level dignitaries to mark an historic moment for the United Kingdom and the State of Qatar.

The Qatar dome, a perfect spherical shape, was inspired by the circular event logo of Qatargas and was surrounded by and reflected in a purpose built lake. ES Group created the dome structure in response to a creative brief for the event developed by WRG Creative Communications to mark the launch of the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the UK by Qatargas. His Royal Highness The Duke of York, Prince Andrew witnessed the official inauguration by HH the Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in the dome.

Belgium - The Belgian national basilica, the Basiliek van Koekelberg, is the country's largest church, (the world's fifth largest basilica) and used for big national ceremonies and services with international acclaim.

Its cross shaped base-form with a 2500 capacity main nave and big side aisles, each with a capacity of some 250 visitors, a depth of 60m. plus the seven seconds reverb made the assignment to provide accurate sound reinforcement a true challenge for audio company Pa-P.A and Alcons' engineer Philip de Haan.

After a first demo-session with Alcons QR36 sets equipped with double RBN1801 pro-ribbon HF drivers: two columns in the main 'national' nave of the Basilica, one column in the 'parish' nave, where it excelled over the existing recently installed beam-steered system in the A/B test, the church management decided to invest in the Alcons system.

Romania - Romanian production company Five's, a member of the Synco Europe Network, successfully staged the country's third J&B Start A Party event in April in the unconventional location of the roof-top of the Moldova Mall in Iasi, the largest city in the Moldova region of Romania, reuniting more than 1000 guests. The production included a city-wide laser lightshow and the construction of a two-metre-high mirror ball, the symbol of the party whisky brand's promotional campaign.

UK - The Trafford Centre in Manchester is one of Europe's largest indoor shopping malls and attracted nearly 35 million visitors in 2008. The Centre is a focal point for shopping and Osram's high power Flood luminaires are used to illuminate 'The Orient' part of the mall, home to a 1,600 seat food court as well as bars and restaurants.

The Osram fittings allow the ceiling within the centre to change colour in order to reflect the changing conditions outside. From a bright blue sky to a reddish sunset sky and all conditions in between the LED technology can create these. USA - Over 140 Robe moving lights have been installed into the new 3800-seat theatre and two ballrooms at the landmark MGM Grand Casino at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Ledyard, Connecticut.

The venues are part of a two-and-a-half-year, $700 million construction project resulting in the new facility, adding 180,000sq.m to the existing Resort to which it is connected via a moving walkway. It includes four restaurants, 825 hotel rooms, 53 table games and 1400 slot machines.

Its professional training arm, Paul Mitchell the School, has a 20-year history, with new sites constantly opening around the US. Its Wichita, Kansas school has recently installed a Turbosound audio system.

The educational facility covers a total area of 12,000sq.ft, which is divided into various areas for specific activities.
