USA - Bandit Lites has teamed up again with lighting designer, Seth Jackson to light Toby Keith's most recent Hookin' Up and Hangin' Out tour. Toby Keith will play sixty-plus shows to cities throughout America from August through November.

In his fourth tour with Toby Keith, Jackson says that he and Keith are very in sync when itcomes to lighting needs and expectations. "Toby Keith is a rock show. It is big, bright, and anything but subtle, "explains Jackson. "We try to interact with the set design yet still give ourselves a lot of layers and positions so we can create as much depth as possible, while still accommodating the necessities of a rock show: heavy backlight, lots of floor angles, audience lighting, and a lot of pyrotechnics."

UK - PRG Europe has been working on several corporate events recently, including a press launch for Persil Be My Coach, which aimed to encourage parents to get involved in sports with their children, and an event for Virgin Cosmetics in September.

At the end of August, the Z Room at the old Truman Brewery was designed to look like a garden while assembled journalists and camera crews took photographs of England cricket captain Michael Vaughan with groups of children. Then a larger event on the same afternoon, including performances by Mr Woo - widely acknowledged as the world's greatest football entertainer - and the Gandini Jugglin' Project launched the Be My Coach programme for children and families. Produced by event management company So Just Add Water, PRG Europe supplied leaf gobos to add to the back garden effect. Craig Bennett, project manager for PRG Europe, explains: &

Portugal - Built in 1923, Teatro Rivoli is the most important theatre in Oporto, Portugal's second biggest city. The building, which is property of the local government, still has the charm of the last century, but the equipment is ultra-modern. For lighting, the theatre is equipped with 250 dimmer channels that are controlled by a full-size grandMA.

Lighting designer João Guedes explains: "I have known grandMA from the beginning. The evolution it's had over the last few years makes it the best console on the market today! It convinced me, not only because of its many possibilities for every kind of lighting, but also because you get free and regular software updates. MA Lighting's doing a great job and we have a console that we can use for any kind of show."

UK - Paul Dumpleton has joined Power Logistics as general manager. Dumpleton will be helping to take the company forward through its ongoing expansion and supporting the existing management at their Wiltshire head office.

Dumpleton says: "My focus is on improving internal systems to benefit our client services and hopefully we can deliver more of the same consistently high level of project management the company is known for."

Power Logistics has enjoyed a busy 2006, with projects ranging from the Queen's 80th birthday party, five major bands stadium concert tours, international corporate marketing events in India, Portugal and Turkey, and there are major sporting events on the horizon.

The thundering launch of the Vari*Lite VL500 by PRG Europe at last year's show (£1m in orders before the show closed) continues to resound with continued sales.

The enhanced X Box, now titled X Box Extreme, has the long-awaited Pixel Mapping function, improved 'transition' functions and lots of new tiling effects, as well as some slick new keystone, 3D generator, and masking functions.

Added to the 'for sale' product range is the Sea Changer from Ocean Optics, an easy add-on in-line colour changer for ETC Source Four profiles. Built to insert between lamp house and lens tube on any model, this dichroic colour mixer comes in two versions: 'Extreme' includes green as well as the usual CMY; beside greatly enhanced greens it also extends to blues, ambers and golds. The standard version has a dimmer wheel instead of green.

Australian DMX tools specialist Enttec Pty Ltdshowcased its latest product, the E-streamer. An Ethernet show recorder, it is capable of recording up to 64 universes of DMX per show. It can record or play multiple shows at once, featuring a built-in scheduler, which allows programming of every conceivable schedule spread over days, months or years. The product Supports ArtNet and ESP protocols, allows simultaneous show recording and playback of up to 1,000 shows.

Smoke connoisseurs were impressed by Swefog's latest high-power T26 smoke machine which offers very smooth output between 1 and 100% in 1% increments. Very compact in size, the machine includes an integrated fan outlet and DMX fan control, so it can be ramped up to impressively mega levels of 1800 cubic metres per minute for outdoor applications.

Zap Technology from Paris, France were in exceptionally good humour and demonstrated a prototype of their new Littlebig 3.0 3kW automated Xenon searchlight fixture - the latest in the BigLight range and the little brother of their flagship BigLite 4.5. The Littlebig 3.0 offers designers real-time CMY colour-mixing, diffusion with electronic strobe and many other customisable effects. With the current design style penchant for high-powered searchlight effects incorporated in larger stage shows, this should attract plenty of interest.

It was the first PLASA and indeed the first European trade show for Moving LED, a new US-based company with a manufacturing base in Hungary. They launched two new LED products for the European market - the MovingLED and the MicroStrip 48, both utilising Luxeon LEDs. Other new items included hinged C-Clamps that can live 'inside' their lighting fixtures - and will never get lost or separated!

The Netherlands - The Ampco / Flashlight Group (AFG) has announced the appointment of Dick van Berkum as its managing director from October 1 2006, succeeding industry pioneer Eric de Bruijn.

Van Berkum, a chartered accountant and a well-known figure in the industry, began working for AFG in February 2006 as financial director with a growing involvement in the group's management. His remit is to continue the strategy and policy developed over recent years, while bringing his considerable corporate, financial and organisational experience to help the Group achieve its ambitions.

Lee Filters launched their new brochure, alongside the latest additions to the 700 series. Seven new colours have been added to the range, created by top lighting designers working in theatre, television, events and architectural lighting. Dane Henrik Hambro is the latest designer invited to create his own unique colours, which include: 706 King Fals Lavender; 710 Spir Special Blue; 740 Aurora Borealis Green; 741 Mustard Yellow; 773 Cardox Amber; 787 Marius Red; and 799 Special K.H. Lavender. Word on the street was that Mustard Yellow was proving a big hit . . .

Martin Professional's focus was brand new products - 10 in all were launched at the show, and the stand this year was devoted entirely to them. First in line was the 1.2k TW1 tungsten washlight, which offers full spectrum colour mixing - impressive across the whole colour gamut from saturated through pastels and impressively into colour correction. The TW1 produces an even light distribution across a projected surface, light output is cool, plus fan cooling is controllable from the console and very quiet. It's the first and only tungsten fixture to feature internal and external dimming, thus maintaining colour temperature over a fade. The other recent moving head addition was the MAC 700 Wash, which offers soft-edge beam, quiet operation, full CMY colour-mixing and an indexable and rotatable beam-shaper.

Chinese manufacturer PR Lighting illustrated their range of moving lights, the newest of which is their Professional series - with 1200 and 700W Spot and Wash fixtures and a 575 Spot. Coming soon as a 1200W unit with framing shutters.

Belgium-based Laser Systems Europe highlighted their new 2 -10W Flash multicolour laser systems and their new Stage Blitz green laser, mounted on a moving light base.

First-time exhibitor Impact Products Europe Ltd showed off its latest product, the Light Space interactive dancefloor. This interactive spatial and pressure-sensitive modular LED tile system can withstand up to three tonnes weight-loading, making it suitable for any kind of interactive floor or wall application. Users can send SMS messages to it, play interactive games on it or run graphics and video through it. The company reported an excellent response to the product at the show.

Element Labs introduced Stealth - a stunning configuration of which was hung as a central feature of the hall. The Stealth panel provides the building block of a transparent, large-scale video screen solution featuring low profile central support and fins - it's virtually transparent when not running. The lightweight Stealth is a modular system composed of 40cm square individual panels, and offering a high-resolution display (25mm pixel pitch). An integrated power supply and data routing unit mounts with each 64-panel section. Processing hardware converts a DVI, HD, SDI, s-video, component, or composite video signal which is routed to the individual panels. French effects specialists Universal Effects launched a new range of medium-sized foam, bubble and confetti hardware which is cost-effective, but with all the features and build quality you could wish for. They also had a new range of carbon dioxide- or nitrogen-powered confetti blowers, allowing users to choose their gas of choice. The largest confetti cannon in the range takes an impressive 40kg of ammunition and is the most powerful in the industry . . .

Dutch manufacturer Lagotronics presented new and existing LED lighting products including the new DecaLED product line, one of the company's most used and frequently updated product lines.

Swisson, which has recently signed a distribution deal with Stage Electrics, was showcasing its 19" rack-mounted modular flightcased Sinewave dimmer rack, which comprises either 12 ways of 2.5kW dimmers @ 230V or six ways of 5kW dimmers @ 230V. Features include: silent dimming with no minimum load, full power management and a useful short circuit function that allows the channel to be reset (after fault removal) from the desk.

On the White Light stand, Look Solutions introduced the Low Fogger, a DMX-controllable vaporising fog generator that uses an adjustable CO2 cooling system for variable fog height, and offers three functions with99-step precision control.

Philips Optical Lamps presented its complete Philips FastFit range. In each of these units, the rear-load lamp base system, developed by Philips and Bender & Wirth, enables easy lamp replacement and adjustments in seconds in difficult stage conditions. The overall fixture length, including the lamp holder, can be reduced by more than 25%, say the company. Initiated by the launch of the Philips MSR Gold 1200 FastFit and Philips Hi-Brite 1200 FastFit earlier this year, the product range has been completed by Philips' MSR Gold 700 FastFit and Philips' Hi-Brite 750 FastFit. Philips FastFit lamps have made their way into fixtures by Robe, Martin, Spotlight and Futurelight.

Exhibiting a range of its visual projection solutions for business, entertainment and industry, Christie Digital Systems develops purpose-built display systems whilst also offering one of the widest selections of display technologies available today.

Australian lighting control manufacturer LSC Lighting Systems unveiled its latest touring dimmer - Teko. Features include 3,000W per channel @ 230V, a full 512-channel softpatch, 80 internal memories, seven dimmer curves and remote status monitoring. LSC's Pulse Transformer Fired Dimmer (PTFD) output circuitry ensures that virtually any load can be connected - even a 5W pilot lamp - without the need for dummy loads, it also ensuresflicker-free dimming, even when running on 'dirty' power.

Also new from LSC was the UK 4RU dimmer, featuring a scrolling dot matrix LED display with bar graph indication of channel levels and simple text descriptions for all menu functions. The unit offers Normal or Advanced operating mode. Access to the DMX addressing, riggers scene, chases and dimmer curves is available with the press of a single button. Michigan-based Leprecon featured the latest version 4 software available for their LP-X range of lighting consoles, which incorporate many user-friendly features like trackball support for pan/tilt and enhanced run time and programmer screen. Leprecon, which already has distribution in Europe and Eastern Europe, is now looking for representation in the UK . . .
