Italy - Star DJ Joe T. Vannelli joins the ranks of top club owners with the recent opening of the Area Venezia in the North Italian town of Mestre. Area Venezia relies on a Dynacord alpha concept system to provide the sound, while guest DJs like Boy George bring on the glamour.

Having worked in many of the finest discotheques in the world, Joe T. Vannelli knew exactly which system he wanted for his own club and entrusted the task of performing the installation to the Renate-based pro audio company dSoundPro.

To tailor the system perfectly to the architecture of the building, dSoundPro's team of experts ran the simulation software EASE. The results of EASE's acoustic CAD simulations revealed not only the position and orientation but also the power handling characteristics of each loudspeaker, all needed to obtain an even distribution of the sound throughout the club, with const

Installing sound, light and multi-media systems in churches and other houses of worship continues to be a steadily growing sector of the integration industry, with the most notable geographic market sectors being the US and the Far East. UK The Sound Division Group recently provided the lighting and sound production for a major charity event at Wilton's Music Hall in East London. The celebrity-packed was jointly organised by 'Glasses Direct' on-line retailer, Jamie Murray Wells and Guy Pelly.

The occasion was in aid of the memorial fund established in memory of Henry van Straubenzee tragically lost his life in a car accident - and which donates to school building projects in Uganda. Seven new schools have been completed with five more planned.

Guy Pelly, of Mayfair celebrity haunt, Mahiki, had got in touch with Sound Division's David Graham, whose long-standing relationship with fellow directors, Nick House and Piers Adams, led to the recommendation. David Graham was delighted to have been asked to participate. "The occasion was in aid of a most worthy cause and yet promised to be a fun event at the same

Germany - A successful visit to Frankfurt's ProLight & Sound resulted in Cologne-based CVT Veranstaltungsservice placing an order for a Soundcraft Vi4 digital mixing console, with German distributors Audio Pro Heillbron.

Jörg Vonten's rental company covers a wide range of shows and events - from rock 'n' roll to industrial - but he has always used Soundcraft mixing desks. "I am very much a 'one man' organisation - but I use first class freelance engineers," he says.

"I had already experienced working on other digital desks but I needed something that sounded better - and would match the quality of the MH3. The last thing I wanted to do was take a backwards step."

USA - Since opening in 1955, the Beverly Hilton has been a classic Southern California landmark, combining the glamour and excitement of Hollywood's entertainment industry with the opulence of Beverly Hills. The hotel's renowned International Ballroom has an impressive pedigree of its own right, including hosting such notable events as the annual Golden Globe Awards, Oscar Nominee Luncheon, and the Milken Institute's Global Conference. The Meyer Sound system at the Beverly Hilton is in a left-centre-right configuration; with five Meyer Sound MICA line array loudspeakers flown left and right, and four M'elodie line array loudspeakers in th

Taiwan - A new temple at the headquarters of one of Taiwan's most famous Buddhist monasteries - Fo Guang Shan in Kaohsiung - has been fitted with a complete QSC Audio system solution - right through the signal chain.

FGS is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan, with branches throughout the world. Founded in 1967 by the Ven. Master Hsing Yun, it set the bar high when specifying its requirement for both speech and musical applications. The sound needed to be pure and transparent - without colouration.

To achieve this objective, the project's main contractor, Session Audio Research, had favoured a complete one stop solution - with processor, amplifiers and loudspeakers all coming from the same manufacturer; they reached the conclusion that QSC provided the best option in terms of both performance and reliability, and specified an Installation Line Array (ILA) as the main soun

USA - As the first non-baseball event for the new Nationals Stadium and the initial step of a high profile journey across the Eastern US, the Papal Mass in Washington D.C. presented a set of challenges for one of the area's leading production companies, MHA Audio.

Asked about producing audio at the elegantly proportioned stadium with its own state of the art system, owner Mike Scarfe explains: "We couldn't use the existing audio system because, as with all stadiums, the sound comes from above and behind the audience; and since the stage for the Papal Mass was at one end and it would have been impossible to time-align it to the stage. We provided sound for the entire stadium and 47,000 people from 60ft towers on either side of the stage. Basically, we had a 550ft throw from the speaker tower to the farthest seat."

"The Aspect rig has received only praise for its power and clarity, it is the perfect system for electronic music," s

UK - Embarking on her third European tour Katie Melua has her sound mixed for the second time by experienced US engineer Bill Fertig, using Studer's new Vista 5 SR - the live version of their successful Vista 5 broadcast desk.

"After the last tour I had been looking for a console that was quicker to use," states the sound engineer. "When you are talking about a live mix you have to consider a lot of paging, which is very queue intensive. Although digital consoles can make things much better, and you can recall most of your settings, there is often a 'slow down' trying to get to where you want to go. The Vistonics platform solves all these problems."

Bill Fertig's introduction to Vistonics had come via the Soundcraft Vi6 - on a show in Mexico City where he was mixing Colombian artist, Juanes. He found the desk both quick and intuitive.

UK - Allen & Heath reports that two additions to the ZED range of small-format USB mixers for live performance, recording and production are now shipping. The ZED-12FX (six mono + three dual stereo channels) and ZED-22FX (16 mono + three dual stereo channels) retain the same feature set as other models in the range with the addition of a comprehensive section of in-house designed effects.

ZED's effects are divided into four types: tap tempo delays, short reverbs, long reverbs and modulation. They are controlled by three buttons for easy navigation and editing, allowing the parameters of each effect to be quickly 'dialed-in' to, for instance, pinpoint the ideal delay time or amount of reverb.

"Much like the ZED range's build and construction, Allen & Heath's approach to the effects was with professional standards and quality in mind. ZED effects are designed by the same R&

UK - The Academy Music Group has opened its newest live music and club venue in Sheffield in the UK, at a cost of £3.5 million. Although AMG has a chain of live clubs around the country, this is the first one that has been equipped with Nexo, thanks to Adlib Audio, the Liverpool-based touring and installation company.

Sheffield is one of those British cities that boasts a vibrant local music scene, and has produced some of the finest bands in the country, including Def Leppard, Joe Cocker, The Human League, Pulp and lately The Arctic Monkeys. Building on that tradition, AMG has created its new Carling Academy venue out of an old purpose-built ballroom which had been used as a discotheque before falling into disrepair for several years.

In fact, there are two venues here; the main stage has a capacity for 1800, while Academy 2 is another production-complete space for arou

The network - including the Varizone system - is controlled via a Crestron Control Panel. Additionally a Klotz Digital Decennium mixing console is bound into the system as soundboard to be used during live events. AV Ganz AG was responsible for project management, planning and installation. Product supply was by FG-Elektronik.
