CP Sound continues its incredibly busy year with its latest club sound and lighting installation at Harry's Bar in Weymouth. The busy nightspot in the South Coast resort has undergone a complete refurbishment and its new look is a colourful, contemporary psychedelic interior with a powerful and impressive sound system.

The independent Harry's Bar is owned by local entrepreneur Nino Ronzitti, who comes from Sicily. He initially contacted Steve Howe from Howie Design to come up with an eye-catching interior design for the club. CP Sound and Howie Design have collaborated on many memorable projects in the last few years, and Howie put CP's name forward for the audio and lighting designs, supply and installation.

Harry's Bar has two floors - a feeder bar downstairs and the main club up above, with a total capacity of 350. It's a well-proportioned environment which demanded fully flexibl

Russia's biggest new stadium has opened with an Apogee sound system. The new 30,000-seat Locomotiv Stadium in Moscow, the home of Russia's major league Locomotiv soccer team and Russia's national team, is the first stadium of its size in Russia designed and built to include a state-of-the-art sound system. The new stadium features 16 Apogee ALA-9 Line Array loudspeakers and is the first open arena system in Russia in which audio signals are routed and distributed entirely within a CobraNet network.

"Locomotiv Stadium combines distinct and unusual architectural ideas with high-tech safety, communication, and other systems - including the finest sound in Russia," said Andrei Kremenchugsky of MediaMatrix Center, the installation department of Dom Zvuka Ltd of Moscow. "It will be Moscow's leading venue for large live concerts in the future."

L-Acoustics has remained faithful to the principle of coaxial technology that it pioneered in the late eighties with the introduction of the MTD product line, and has recently released the XT line, featuring the latest generation in coaxial components. Compared with traditional horn and woofer combinations, L-Acoustics systems are ideal for distributed sound reinforcement, and demonstrate the benefits of coaxial technology, such as single point source radiation and excellent phase response; total wavefront coherency at any frequency; axi-symmetrical directivity and dispersion characteristics free of polar lobbing.

The end result is natural, studio monitor level sound quality, ideal for proximity use and perfectly matching semi-reverberant environments. Multi-purpose in their format, MTDs and XTs are all-in-one products that can be used as a compact FOH system (with or without subwoofe

Amália The Musical has been taking the Portuguese theatre scene by storm over recent months, becoming the most successful Portuguese production ever - with audiences exceeding 1.5 million to date. Directed by Filipe La Féria, the musical charts the life and career of the Portuguese fado singer, Amália Rodrigues. Tragically, she died just before the première of the show about her colourful past opened in Funchal, Madeira, in December 1999, moving to the Politeama Theatre in Lisbon in July 2000. The show went out on tour in early 2002, complete with a new Cadac F-Type Live Production Console, and is currently set to move to other European cities in 2003 and ultimately Brazil as well.

The sound system was designed by Carlos Esteves, technical director of CHS Sound and Light Hire. Amália The Musical is a complex and challenging show to mix, with 54 actors on stage and 38

Apogee Sound International has named Keith Vanderkley as director of North American sales, Eastern Region. Vanderkley assumes responsibility for Apogee's sales efforts east of the Mississippi in the United States, as well as in Ontario and the eastern provinces of Canada.

A former technical coordinator for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Vanderkley brings 30 years experience in live sound and recording to Apogee Sound. The Stanton Group has announced the purchase of the assets and brand name of Cerwin-Vega Inc. Confirming the company’s successful bid, Stanton president and CEO Gerard Cohen stated: "We are very excited about this opportunity to grow and expand our business portfolio. We feel that the strength and heritage of the Cerwin-Vega brand name will be a strong complement to our existing businesses and create synergies in the future. We also clearly recognize the value of the existing customer base and are committed to maintaining strong business partners going forward. Stanton will stand strong behind the Cerwin-Vega product and brand name."

Recognizing the difficulties Cerwin-Vega had faced this past year - requiring them to solicit protection from creditors - the Stanton Group had become instinctively attracted to owning one of the greatest names in the speaker industry over

In mid-August, Zurich hosted the 10th Streetparade, Europe’s largest techno music event, which was attended by 600,000 people from across the world. The event’s central features were the Lovemobiles, huge trucks equipped with high-power sound systems, and animations, to ‘bombard’ the crowd with techno sounds.

This year’s event featured a total of 29, of which three (24m long and 3.5m high) were 'armed' with systems by Italian manufacturer Outline: 4 Modulo Road High, 4 Modulo Road Bass, 8 Doppia, 4 Bomber, 8 Stackbass, 8 Victor Live, 4 Victor Disco, 4 Topsub, 8 Minisub, 16 Digita, 8 Omnia, 2 Tripla, 6 Flyone and 2 Stage 15 - all powered by digital T series power amps and processed by Genius 6 DSP. A Pro 408 and a Pro 405 console were used by the DJs.

The Youth Wind Orchestra of Grimma, Germany, was hit hard by the recent catastrophic floods - but Telex/EVI Audio was able to help. Along with countless households and firms, the Youth Wind Orchestra of Grimma was severely affected, but what was particularly cruel in their case was that after spending years saving up for a first class sound system, they had barely had time to unpack it when the waters of the Elbe burst in and destroyed not only their new acquisition (a new Dynacord Cobra system) but virtually all their orchestral instruments as well.

Luckily, help was at hand: the Rudolf Wild Werke of Heidelberg, the Großkelterei Rötha GmbH, the Musikhaus Dassler of Choren and Telex EVI Audio stepped in quickly and put together a rescue package consisting of money and material aid sufficient to reequip the young musicians not only with new instruments but with a new Cobra system as w

Brähler ICS has completed the planning, supply and installation of conference technology systems for the main boardroom and press briefing room in new premises now occupied by E-ON, a major energy corporation in Dusseldorf. Video and projection were included as part of the overall project. Joinery was provided by Koenig & Co. Being on the 9th floor, the boardroom has a magnificent view over the city, while the building’s architecture imposes a curvature on both the room and the table, which create a visual dynamic as well as having implications for the acoustics.

The CDS-200 microphone management, which is integrated with a 16-channel interpretation system, allows board members to listen to the proceedings, vote, and use their authenticating chip-cards. The standard TM55 microphone was modified to a length of 500mm to allow for even better audio quality. Information conveyed by

Stardraw and ProSoundWeb have announced the launch of 'Stardraw.net from ProSoundWeb'. Stardraw.net is a suite of technologies that allows one to design and document integrated systems through a browser using an on-line library of thousands of industry-specific symbols, and is believed to be the world's first web-based CAD system.

'Stardraw.net from ProSoundWeb' represents the introduction of a web-based application that incorporates tools and data tailored to the professional audio market. Stardraw MD David Snipp explains "Our conventional applications have established the sorts of tools that integrators find easy to use and valuable for system design and documentation. This web-based application has been customized for ProSoundWeb to provide their Stardraw.net subscribers with similar functionality within a ProSoundWeb web page."

The recently-launched Artist Elite series of microphones has quickly established itself as the first choice for some of the biggest names in the music industry. Artist Elite users include Rush, Jewel, Vanessa Carlton, Puddle of Mudd, Third Eye Blind, Def Leppard, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and Cinderella.

Currently on tour with Rush, front-of-house (FOH) engineer Brad Madix, a long-time Audio-Technica user who has worked with Marilyn Manson, Def Leppard, Queensryche, and Bruce Hornsby, commented on Rush’s choice of Artist Elite: "We’re using AE5400s for lead singer Geddy Lee’s vocals and two AE3000s on Neil Peart’s rack and floor toms," stated Madix. "Our monitor engineer and I did a blind listening test and put the AE5400 against all the usual suspects. We turned our backs while one of the sound guys went from one mic to the other, and we both

Audemat, Aztec Radiomedia and Digigram have announced the merger of Audemat with Aztec Radiomedia, a subsidiary of Digigram, with effect from 31 December, 2002. The merger will result in the formation of a new company within the Digigram group: Audemat-Aztec Solutions.

"This is a logical move in Digigram’s development strategy for the broadcast and public address markets," said Philippe Delacroix, Digigram managing director. "This merger will accelerate growth, especially in the broadcast sector. Audemat-Aztec Solutions will reap benefits from the commercial, technological, and financial assets of all three companies involved."

"We find ourselves today at a turning point in broadcast. With the arrival of digital technology and the development of Intranet/Internet networks, companies need to be reactive. Both Audemat and Aztec Radiomedia rose to this cha

Following a highly successful launch at the recent PLASA show, Hand Held Audio has become the first company in the UK to invest in the new APM Series (Advanced Personal Monitoring) hardwired distributed personal monitoring system from Garwood.

The APM Series is designed to provide a simple and cost-effective solution to a familiar problem for sound engineers and production managers: how to provide distributed monitoring for a large orchestra/band setup (such as with a West End musical or a studio recording session) without the hassle and expense of either a wireless system, battery- or mains-powered headphone monitoring, or open loudspeakers. It also provides a perfect solution to providing large numbers of audio feeds at events such as press conferences.

According to Hand Held's Nick Bruce Smith, the APM Series addresses a very real issue to which they had yet to find a completely s

With more than 50 stops scheduled in the US, followed by a European leg, Bruce Springsteen recently made his third stop at New York’s Madison Square Garden in support of his new album ‘The Rising’, the first recorded with the E Street Band since 1984. Colorado-based sound reinforcement supplier Audio Analysts has been providing concert sound support on mega tours for over three decades, and made all decisions as to what system would be used for their client of 10 years. "We have a longstanding relationship with our clients and if we say ‘this will work’ they trust us," explains Albert Leccese, VP of engineering and tour sound. "The criteria for any piece of equipment we use - be it amps, speakers, effects or consoles - is reliability, audio quality, and ease of use."

Hand Held Audio has recently developed a new strain of custom ear monitors. The company was approached by Craig Donaldson, sound engineer for the Super Furry Animals, to see if acrylic ear moulds could successfully be coupled to Sennheiser IE3 generic monitors. This made a lot of sense for the band who are Sennheiser endorsees.

Acrylic ear moulds were the original custom ear monitors developed by Garwood back in 1990 which remain ever-popular today. They were designed to couple with Sony Walkman-style drivers to produce a great-sounding and inexpensive ear monitor. The challenge in adapting the design for the Sennheiser drivers lay in their radically different shape, particularly the sound exit tube. A certain amount of head scratching is normal in such circumstances, and after due process it magically produced a couple of new engineering techniques. The drivers were in the moulds - no

The audio industry’s annual charity sailing event took place over the last weekend of September. In glorious weather eleven, matched, boats sailed a series of four races in the Solent. With three firsts and a third, Beyerdynamic was declared the overall winner, with T.M. Audio from Holland in second place. Other participants, in alphabetical (not result) order, were Arup Acoustics, Brahler, The Elizabeth Foundation, HW International, Martin Audio, Neutrik, Sound Advice, Sound Foundation and Vistek.

After two races on Saturday and putting into Cowes, IOW, the crews repaired to the Island Sailing Club for a well-earned supper - and to contribute to the charity raffle. Originally begun in 1989 as PASTY (Professional Audio Sailing Trophy) with Dave Martin on the winning boat, the event was revived in 1990 and the name changed in memory of that first winner. Since the revival, all pro

Ken DeLoria, founder and president of Apogee Sound Incorporated, is to leave the company to pursue other interests. After 18 years of designing and providing leading-edge loudspeakers, amplifiers and other products for the pro audio industry, DeLoria will now concentrate on his ‘second career’ of consulting, commissioning, tuning and operating sound reinforcement systems for installations and events worldwide.

DeLoria commented: "During the years that I ran Apogee, I was fortunate to be able to help many clients achieve maximum performance of their sound systems by participating directly in system design, tuning, operator training and other hands-on tasks for a great number of permanent installations, shows and events, which was highly rewarding."

DeLoria is a veteran engineer of six Grammy Award shows, seven Academy Award shows, two Super Bowls, numerous Bro

FX Music Control, the sales arm of the FX Group, has acquired a very rare analogue EMS Synthi 100 synthesiser, which is now undergoing extensive restoration to bring it back to its original, pristine condition. As any collector of vintage synths knows, the EMS Synthi 100 is one of the most sought-after musical instruments on the market. Originally built in the early 1970s, the Synthi was the instrument used by the BBC's Radiophonic Studio in Maida Vale to create the soundtracks and sound effects for such classic programmes as Dr Who.

Only 25 to 30 Synthis were ever made and of those, very few remain intact. Most were dismantled years ago for parts or were heavily modified. With its serial number of 002, it is believed that FX Music Control's Synthi is the oldest in existence. No one can remember what happened to 001 but 003 went to the BBC and 004 went to Radio Belgrade and has probabl

Millbank Electronics has extended its sole distribution agreement with RW Salt for a further three years. RW Salt is the UK’s biggest wholesale distributor of CCTV, PA/VA and professional audio equipment and has been the exclusive supplier of Millbank products to the UK market place for the last two years.

Millbank’s range of XK amplifiers and off-the-shelf multi zone broadcast systems - JustiFire, QualiFire and VeriFire - will now be the focus for RW Salt as it looks to build on its strategy of providing system design and installation solutions. Craig Buckley, general manager of RW Salt, told us: "We are delighted to extend our agreement with Millbank, which has a highly regarded industry name and is respected for the quality and reliability of its products. We have appointed John Smither as our Millbank specialist, based at our Manchester branch - reflecting our comm

Wharfedale Programme 60T and 50T cabinets delivered more oompah to the masses at Munich’s traditional Oktoberfest this year than any other loudspeaker. The transformer versions of the popular installation speaker featured in no fewer than seven of the 14 tents, which necessitated the purchase of 90 enclosures by local rental company LuTV GmbH.

According to Johnny Kluten of Wharfedale Pro distributor IAG GmbH, who sold the speakers, to have so many British boxes roaming free in Bavaria - the backyard of Germany’s most famous loudspeaker manufacturer - was an added bonus. Kluten says it was the versatility of the high-output Programme series that appealed to a range of exhibitors, exposing them to some 5 million people over the two weeks. "We had some idea about the attributes of competitive boxes but we believe the Programme series was a better product at a better price

Continuing with its commitment to integrated audio systems, Yamaha has introduced the PC Series power amplifiers, NHB32-C Cobranet Network Hub Bridge and ACU16-C Cobranet Amplifier Control Unit at the AES exhibition in Los Angeles. The PC4800N and PC9500N amplifiers are powerful, efficient and surprisingly quiet choices for any fixed or mobile application, say Yamaha. Both models have been engineered to reproduce power linearity and very low distortion - even when driven hard - resulting in an uncoloured, "three-dimensional" feel of the original sound source.

The PC4800N amplifier delivers two channels of 800W power (20Hz to 20kHz) into 4 ohms, and a bridged mono channel of 1600W. The PC9500N amplifier offers two channels of 1500-watt power at 4 ohms (20 Hz to 20 kHz), or a single channel of 3000W, bridged mono. Total Harmonic Distortion is 0.5%. Both PC Series models feature
